Two shillings and sixpence net Andrew Young is probably unique among twentieth century poets, forhe is a Christian mystic, whose poems on their deepest level are medita-tions.They are filled with a gentle faith which imbues his love for everybird, beastand plant ofthe English countryside witha special significance. He writes little and slowly, and formally he is unadventurous;but he isnever commonplace. He is a poet of great individuality and quality, and it is the author's beliefthat Young's Into Hades ‘is the most powerfullong poem in the English language since the publication of T.S.Eliot'sFour Quartets'. R.S.Thomas,like Young an Anglican priest,is far removed from thegentler aspects of the English countryside. His life has been spent in aremote hill parish in Wales, and his poems reflect his uncompromizingprocess of self-identification with the inarticulate hill-farmers who had atfirst filled him with despair. In his later poems, the author shows, thepoet's own hard-won understanding of the human lot is an invitation tothe poetic conscience of a wide English reading public...to re-examinethe accepted premises of its over-intellectualized way of life'. Leonard Clark, who writes about Andrew Young,is a poet, editorand broadcaster. He has published an anthology of poems for children,Drums and Trumpets,a volume of reminiscences,Green Wood:AGloucestershire Childhood, and a collection of original children's poems,Daybreak. He edited The Collected Poems of Andrew Young, and a tributeto the poet called Andrew Young:Prospect of a Poet. , R.G.Thomas,the author of the essay on R.S.Thomas,is SeniorLecturer in English Language and Literature at University College,Cardiff, and is well-known in Wales as a poet, critic and broadcaster. He is on the editorialboard of the Anglo-Welsh Review, and has publishedmany articles in Britain,America and the Continent on English writersin Wales.
