Oct 6, 2026

Wild magic zones appear when an arcane oddity or corruption disrupts a region’s natural magic. Magic there becomes unpredictable, producing strange outcomes after failures of interplanar travel, major magical battles, or the destruction of powerful artifacts or creatures. Restoring such zones can take decades or even become irreversible. The supplement also supplies Spelljammer wild magic surge tables, with rules for triggering surges and rolling d100 results, including guidance for DCs, spellcasting exceptions, and permanent durations when no duration is specified.

WILD MAGIC IN WILDSPACE WILD MAGIC ZONES Wild magic zones manifest when some arcane oddity or corruption occurs in a region's natural weave of magic. As a result, magic becomes unpredictable, and strange results often occur whenever a creature taps into their magical abilities or items. These unpredictable places form under various circumstances such as when interplanar travel goes wrong, in the aftermath of a large-scale magical battle, or when a powerful artifact or magical creature was destroyed. Restoring such a region to its natural state could take decades, centuries, or even be irreversible. Adventurers who find themselves in zones of wild magic should keep a close eye on the nearest mage. SPELLJAMMER WILD MAGIC SURGE TABLES This supplement provides a wild magic table for Spelljammer: Adventures in Space. Dungeon Masters may adapt this table for their own games to introduce a wild magic zone filled with wacky space-themed effects such as polymorphing in a Giant Space Hamster, growing a laser-shooting eyestalk out of your head, or conjuring a blackhole. HOW TO TRIGGER A SURGE It 's up to the Dungeon Master to determine how a wild magic surge occurs, but consider rolling on the wild magic surge table when the following circumstances occur in the area: ● When a creature casts a spell of 1st level or higher or activates a magical effect. ● When a creature expends a charge from a magic item. ● If a celestial, a dragon, an elemental, or a fey of challenge rating 5 or higher dies. ● When a creature rolls a 1 on a spell attack or saving throw to avoid a spell or magical effect. HOW TO USE THE TABLES When a wild surge is triggered, roll a d100 to determine a random result from the table. ● If a saving throw is required to avoid a spell, the effect suggests a DC that is 10 + the spell level. If the creature that triggered the wild magic surge is aspellcaster, the DM may choose to use the creature’s spellcasting ability modifier or spell save DC instead of the suggested DC. ● If the effect casts a spell, the spell does not expend a spell s lot or require material components. In addition, the spell does not count against the number of spells a creature can normally cast on one turn. ● If a duration is not mentioned, then the effect is permanent. Design Note: This table was crafted following the original wild magic surge table provided in the Player 's Handbook (2014) with added inspiration from the Supernatural Regions and Magical Phenomena sections of Tasha 's Cauldron of Everything. The table is meant to be class-agnostic and isn 't exclusive to the wild magic sorcerer. Some of the e fects reference creatures, magic items, and spells from various supplements published by Wizards of the Coast. The references page contains details about where to find the relevant information. FAQs

What causes wild magic zones to form?

They manifest when an arcane oddity or corruption occurs within a region’s natural weave of magic. This can happen after interplanar travel goes wrong, following large-scale magical battles, or when powerful artifacts or magical creatures are destroyed.

When should a dungeon master roll on the wild magic surge table?

Roll when specific events occur in the area, such as a creature casting a 1st-level-or-higher spell, activating a magical effect, expending a magic-item charge, a CR 5+ celestial/dragon/elemental/fey dies, or a creature rolls a 1 on a spell attack or saving throw to avoid an effect.

How do the surge tables determine the effect?

When a surge is triggered, roll a d100 to select a random result from the table. If a saving throw is needed to avoid the effect, the DC is 10 + the spell level unless the DM chooses an alternative DC based on the triggering creature’s spellcasting ability.
