When You Say, “Thermonuclear War,” I Think You Mean “the Call to Adventure”! - The Twilight: 2000 Tabletop Role-Playing Game and the Postapocalyptic World’s Imaginary Spaces

Oct 6, 2026

Cold War and nuclear-age scholarship often ignores tabletop role-playing games, despite extensive analysis of media that depict the grim, imagined but plausible aftermath of nuclear conflict. This article examines Twilight: 2000 as an American-designed cultural object, showing how its mechanics, setting, and artwork let players pursue “adventures” that express and affirm nuclear-age fears. It frames the game within a wider dystopian fantasy grounded in everyday atomic annihilation, linking play to a distinct Cold War culture.

What are TTRPGs?

Journal of American Studies (2025), 1–20 doi:10.1017/S0021875825000283 A RT IC L E When You Say,“Thermonuclear War,” I Think You Mean “the Call to Adventure”! The Twilight: 2000 Tabletop Role-Playing Game and the Postapocalyptic World’s Imaginary Spaces Malcolm Craig Department of History, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool, UK [Email:](Email: m.m.craig@ljmu.ac.uk)[ m.m.craig@ljmu.ac.uk](Email: m.m.craig@ljmu.ac.uk) (Accepted 29 November 2024) Abstract Historians of the Cold War and the nuclear age have largely overlooked the existence of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), while films, comics, novels, and television programmes that tackled the challenging imaginary, yet all-too-possible, wastes of a post-nuclear landscape have been abundantly analysed. As cultural products and tools through which to imagine other worlds, TTRPGs offer powerful insights into how, where, and why certain groups thought about the spectre of the nuclear age and how they dealt with this threat by gaming within make-believe postapocalyptic worlds. This article draws together several threads in its analysis of the American-designed and-produced Twilight: 2000 TTRPG’s historical significance. Through analysing Twilight: 2000 as a case study of how a TTRPG functions as a specific nuclear-cultural object in its own right, the article also locates this game as a part ofa widerreaching dystopian fantasy rooted in the massive everyday reality of atomic annihilation. Likewise, the game, its mechanics, setting, and artwork are analysed here as part of a distinctive Cold War culture that permitted participants to derive pleasure and affirmation from fictional “adventures” in the postapocalyptic environment. In 1995, the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China went to war. As the conflict spilled over into Europe, a cabal of East and West German military officers opportunistically staged a coup to force German reunification. With NATO fighting the Warsaw Pact across the continent, the war escalated into a nuclear exchange in 1997. Millions of people lost their lives, and in Europe, the United States, and the Soviet Union, civilization began to collapse. A few small groups of American soldiers attempted to survive in an irradiated, chaotic Poland, before trying to find a way back home to a fractured, devastated United States. Their stories have largely never been told beyond a very narrow community. Of course, we all know that by 1995 the USSR had ceased to exist, Germany had peacefully reunified, and the world had not become a postapocalypticwasteland. The © The Author(s), 2025 . Given their popularity, it seems strange that scholars studying America’s Cold War and nuclear age have largely overlooked such games, while films, comics, novels, and television programmes that tackled the challenging, imaginary, yet
