AFTER most boys and girls have been pitchforked from anelementary school into a job in a factory, mine,or office, they generally accept things as they find them. But by thetime they reach the age of 18 or thereabouts many are compelled, through the experiences already encountered,to ask themselveswhat is wrong with the world. There is no doubt that very fewof the youth of to-day are absolutely satisfied and content withlife and conditions as they are. Well, let us ask first of all,“What is wrong with things?”In the first place,we live under what is known as the Capitalistsystem of society, within which there are two classes of people. On the one hand,we have a small and select little band of richpeople, who enjoy all the comforts and luxuries of life. And,on the other hand,we have a large poor class always strugglingand striving and never far away from acute poverty. At one end of the social scale we have such people as the lateLord Iveagh, who died recently leaving L11,000,000,and at theother end of the scale we have crowds of unemployed youngminers who have no unemployment pay,no parish relief, and atpresent are crowding out the workhouses in the coalfields. We have two classes again when we think of the unemployed. We have those who go the rounds of Ascot,Aintree,Wimbledon,Henley, and Royal Garden Parties;and spend the winter baskingin the sunny climes around the Riviera. And we have thosewho go round factories, pits and Labour Exchanges hopingagainst hope for a job. The I.LP.Guild of Youth are out to abolish this divisioninto classes with all its poverty, inequalities, unfairness andinjustice. We mean to abolish both rich and poor. The peoplewith too much money must be pulled down from their highestate, and the people with too little must be dragged up fromthe morass of poverty and despair. The workers create thewealth of the nation and they must have first claim to it.Wesaythat the workers are entitled to a decent share of the good thingsof life before the rich idlers. There has never been any bright prospects for the youngworkers under Capitalism;but to-day our prospects are blackerthan ever before. The big industries, mining, cotton andengineering, arein a state of collapse.Thousands and thousandsof young workers have been unemployed for many months and this state of affairs is likely to get worse.Under the latestUnemployment Bill introduced by the Tory Government only asmall minority of the unemployed young workers will receiveunemployment benefit.Boards of Guardians are not allowed togive relief to young workers who have no unemployment pay;and so the only things left for them are emigration, the Army, orthe workhouse. This is the tragic disillusionment that we arebeing brought face to face with, after being taught at school tothink of "this England"as "This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,This earth ofmajesty, this seat of Mars,This other Eden,
