Keith E. Stanovich argues that intelligence tests such as IQ assessments and standardized exams do not adequately capture how people actually think and function in real-world decision-making. The book explains how critics underestimate the role of emotional, interpersonal, and especially rational thought. It highlights missing cognitive abilities like judgment, evidence evaluation, and rational planning, introducing concepts such as dysrationalia and the reflective mind to stress rationality as a core measure alongside traditional intelligence.

Stanovich What Intelligence Tests Miss Redefining Intelligence: The Essential Role of Rational Thought Written by Bookey Check more about What Intelligence Tests Miss Summary Listen What Intelligence Tests Miss Audiobook About the book In "What Intelligence Tests Miss," Keith E. Stanovich challenges the prevailing view that intelligence tests, such as IQ assessments and the SAT, sufficiently capture cognitive functioning. While critics like Robert Sternberg, Howard Gardner, and Daniel Goleman highlight the tests' neglect of emotional and interpersonal skills, Stanovich goes further to argue that these tests are fundamentally incomplete. He reveals that they overlook essential cognitive abilities tied to effective thinking, such as judgment, decision-making, and rational thought. These skills are vital for real-world functioning, influencing how we plan, assess evidence, and make informed choices. Stanovich makes a compelling case for recognizing the importance of rational thought, advocating for its value tobe placed on par with traditional measures of intelligence. About the author Keith E. Stanovich is an Emeritus Professor of Applied Psychology and Human Development at the University of Toronto and a former Canada Research Chair in Applied Cognitive Science. With a prolific career, he has authored more than 200 scientific articles and seven influential books. Stanovich earned his BA in psychology from Ohio State University in 1973 and completed his PhD in psychology atthe University of Michigan in 1977.
