The Bush administration has setup a model program of 260 investi-gators with a charge of locating andarresting the 26,000 fugitiveswanted for serious crimes commit-ted in New Jersey. In its first six months of infor-mal operation,the task force hasmade more than 1,000 arrests of fu-gitives including apprehensions inother states. The federal,state and local taskforce will be deputized to cross statelines whenever necessary to conductinvestigations and make arrests. The New Jersey-New York re-gional task force was formalized ina ceremony at Trenton's War Me-morial building,where U.S.Attor-ney Christopher Christie,state At-torney General David Samson andother officials signed a memoran-dum of understanding describingwhat they will bring to the effort. The task force will link all thestate and regionai law enforcementagencies,allow poiice to cross statelines for fugitives,set up telephonetiplines and a website with photo-graphs and information about fug1-tives. The coordination of federal,state and local law enforcementbacked by federal funding repre-sents the "the largest single com-mitment”of law enforcement re-sources ever undertaken in NewJersey,said Gov.James E.McGreevey. The task force targets the 100most wanted New Jersey fugitives,including people most wanted bythe state police,the Division ofCriminal Justice,each county,theFBI and the U.S.Marshals Service. The state police have their ownfugitive unit,as local police andcounty sheriffs typically do.But lo-cal police usually do not have theauthority to pursue a criminal out-side their jurisdiction. The New Jersey/New YorkTask Force and one in Californiaare serving as pilot programs for aBush anti-crime pian that has beenin formation since spring. The most sought fugitives arewanted for murder,conspiracy todistribute illegal drugs or theft bydeception. The New Jersey-New York Re-gional Fugitive Task Force has beenoperating on an ad hoc basis sinceMay 5,when it and a companion Page 2 "We are putting lawbreakers onnotice,"McGreevey said.“We willtrack you down and capture you.” "Each of us brings somethingdifferent to the table,"Christie said. The federal government bringsmoney and the worldwide resourcesof the U.S.Marshals Service whilestate and local law enforcementagencies provide manpower. James Plousis,the U.S.Marshalfor New Jersey,swore in an addi-tional 60 state and local investiga-tors as special deputy U.S.Mar-shals.He said about 200 state andlocal law enforcement officials havenow been deputized and they willsupplement the 68 deputy U.S.Mar-shals in the state. Plousis said this designation al-lows them to pursue and apprehendfugitives across state lines and carrytheir firearms whiie doing it. Plousis said many of the 26,000fugitives wanted for crimes commit-ted in New Jersey are believed to bein other states. "Now we'll be able to chasethem down if they are in Florida,orwherever,"he said.
