Vision for the Future and Roadmap to BIM - BIM Promotion Roundtable - 2019.9 - Japan

Oct 28, 2026

Vision for the Future and Roadmap to BIM outlines BIM (Building Information Modelling) as a foundation for building information models that combine 3D form, room data, material specifications, performance, and building attributes. It contrasts current CAD workflows with BIM-enabled lifecycle use, covering design, construction, operation and maintenance, and handover with asset and facility management. The roadmap targets high-quality, efficient, and internationally shareable production, supported by databases, platforms, standardization, simulation, and coordination with IoT/AI and infrastructure platforms.

Vision for the Future and Roadmap to BIM BIM Promotion Roundtable｜ 2019.9｜ Japan What is BIM? BIM (Building Information Modelling) is... a system which builds a structure’s information model to include not only three-dimensional form information created with a computer but also room names and areas, the specifications and performance of materials and components, and the building attribute information. Current mainstream（CAD） ▶ Drawings are created individually. Floor plan, elevations, sections/structural drawings/mechanical and electrical drawings ▶ Attribute information for walls, equipment, [etc. is](etc. is) linked to drawings in an analog way. ▶ Design information is seldom used after construction. Building production and maintenance process using BIM Asset Management Facility Management Operation & Maintenance Handover and Close Out Site Management BIM Attribute Information ・Finish & Substrate ・Incombustible/ Semi-incombustible ・Door & Window Types ・Fire-Resistance Performance ・Floor & Ceiling Heights ・Restrictions on Interior etc. Simulation Construction Construction Planning Developed Design / Technical Design Design ▶ Improves communication and understanding by“visualizing”a building in a three-dimensional form. ▶ Attribute information can be added to each model. ▶ Enables use of information throughout the life cycle of a building and linking to IoT. FAQs

What information does BIM include beyond 3D geometry?

BIM builds an information model including not only 3D form but also room names and areas, material/component specifications and performance, and building attribute information.

How does BIM improve design, construction, and operation and maintenance workflows?

BIM improves communication through visualization, enables attribute information to be added to each model, and supports continuous information use across the building lifecycle with links to IoT.

What key approaches does the roadmap propose for realizing the BIM vision?

The roadmap emphasizes spread and evolution of BIM, standardization of model geometries and attribute information, development of sharing infrastructure, human resource development, coordination with infrastructure platforms, and international competitiveness aligned with global standards.
