VCE INDUCTION PACKAGE 2021 UNITS 1 AND 2 FOUNDATION MATHEMATICS Welcome Dear students, Welcome to Foundation Mathematics Units 1 and 2. If you are well organised, motivated and have a good work ethic, you will have an enjoyable and successful year in Foundation Mathematics. In order to get the most out of this course, there are a number of things that we strongly suggest that you do over the summer and continue throughout the year. 1. Complete the holiday homework tasks by the due date. 2. Familiarise yourself with the detailed course outline provided in this package. 3. Develop a good working relationship with your class teacher and maintain regular communication with them throughout the year. 4. Develop a study timetable that will assist you in meeting the work deadlines. 5. Ensure that you become familiar with the resources (prescribed textbook, websites, notes, other textbooks) 6. Become familiar with the school’s VCE compliance policy by reading the VCE handbook located on MOODLE. 7. Ensure that you have a balanced life that consists of schoolwork, exercise, sport, leisure, rest and a healthy diet. If you have any queries about the course, please contact your teacher at school or by email. On behalf of the Foundation Mathematics staff, we wish you all the best for your studies next year, Regards, Mr Loh 11 Foundation Maths Staff | Name | Email Address | Office Location | | --- | --- | --- | | Mr Loh | [lohb@vermontsc.vic.edu.au](lohb@vermontsc.vic.edu.au) | Main Staff Office | OUTLINE OF STUDY Foundation Mathematics Units 1 and 2 provide for a range of courses of study involving non-calculus based topics for a broad range of students and may be implemented in various ways to reflect student interests in, and applications of, mathematics. They incorporate topics that provide preparation for various combinations of studies at Units 3 and 4 and cover assumed knowledge and skills for those units. Outcome 1 On completion of this unit the student should be able to use and apply a range of mathematical concepts, skills and procedures from selected areas of study to solve practical problems based on a range of everyday and real-life contexts. Outcome 2 On completion of this unit the student should be able to apply mathematical processes in non-routine practical contexts, including situations with some open-ended aspects requiring investigative, modelling or problem-solving techniques or approaches, and analyse and discuss these applications of mathematics. Outcome 3 On completion of this unit the student should be able to apply computational thinking and use numerical, graphical, symbolic and statistical functionalities of technology to develop mathematical ideas, produce results and carry out analysis in practical situations requiring investigative, modelling or problem-solving techniques or approaches. 2021 Topics UNIT 1 Topic 1: Numbers Topic 2: Univariate Data Topic 3: Financial Maths Topic 4: Measurement UNIT 2 Topic 5: Algebra Topic 6: Bivariate Data Topic 7: Financial Maths Topic 8: Geometry and maps Assessments A bound reference book and CAS calculator are permitted for all 11 Foundation Mathematics assessment tasks.
