Directors welcomed the progress Uzbekistan has achieved during the previous CPF cycle to open and transform its economy. They noted the government’s efforts in advancing reforms and maintaining growth during the global pandemic but expressed concerns about the negative impact of the global and regional spillover from the war in Ukraine on Uzbekistan’s future reform momentum and economic growth. Directors stressed the importance of responding to shocks to protect the most vulnerable citizens, particularly women and youth. They welcomed the systematic integration of gender issues across WBG engagements and sectors, efforts at social protection, and the development of inclusive labor market policies. They underscored the need to diversify the economy and sustain reforms to enable more private sector investment, job creation, and access to new labor markets with global trade integration, with attention to migration issues. They highlighted the need to improve economic competitiveness and strengthen the country’s regional connectivity and encouraged greater support for the digital economy agenda.
