Arrival of English in India

Role of English in the Nationalist Movement and the Post-Independence Era

UNIT VI: ENGLISH IN INDIA – HISTORY, EVOLUTION, AND FUTURES (SHORT NOTES) HPSC UNIT VI: ENGLISH IN INDIA – HISTORY, EVOLUTION, AND FUTURES 1. ARRIVAL OF ENGLISH IN INDIA The arrival of English in India can be traced back to the early 17th century with the establishment of the British East India Company. Initially a language of trade and diplomacy, English gradually assumed a dominant role in administration and governance as British political control expanded across the subcontinent. By the late 18th century, English had begun to take root in Indian society, particularly among the elite and urban populations who interacted closely with the colonial administration. The British viewed language as a powerful tool of control and saw the promotion of English as essential for consolidating their rule. The turning point in the institutionalization of English came with the educational reforms of the 19th century. One of the most significant developments was Lord Macaulay's Minute on Indian Education (1835), which argued for the promotion of English education over classical languages like Sanskrit and Persian. Macaulay's infamous statement about creating “a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect” highlights the imperialist motives behind the introduction of English. The aim was to cultivate a group of intermediaries who could assist the British in administration while being ideologically aligned with them. Following this policy shift, English was made the medium of instruction in many schools and colleges across British India. The English Education Act of 1835 officially endorsed this policy. The establishment of institutions like Hindu College (1817) in Calcutta and later Presidency College further strengthened English education. These institutions trained a new class of Indians in Western sciences, literature, and legal systems, creating a significant sociocultural shift. The English language became associated with progress, modernity, and social mobility, leading to its enthusiastic adoption by many Indians despite its foreign origins. However, this educational policy was not without its critics. Indian intellectuals such as Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore later questioned the alienating effects of English education, arguing that it created a cultural and psychological divide between Indians and their own heritage. Despite these concerns, English continued to gain ground, especially in urban centers, gradually transforming into a lingua franca among Indians from different linguistic backgrounds. In The arrival of English in India was not merely a linguistic phenomenon but a deeply political and cultural one. The colonial state deliberately promoted English to serve its administrative and ideological purposes. The British education system institutionalized the language, embedding it within India's academic, bureaucratic, and social structures. Though introduced as a tool of imperialism, English later evolved into a platform for Indian self-expression, resistance, and modern identity formation, laying the foundation for its continued relevance in contemporary India. 2. ROLE OF ENGLISH IN THE NATIONALIST MOVEMENT AND THE POST-INDEPENDENCE ERA During the Indian nationalist movement, English played a paradoxical yet vital role. Although it was the language of the colonial oppressor, English became a unifying medium for nationalist leaders and intellectuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds. Educated Indians used the English language to critique colonial policies, draft petitions, engage in political debates, and rally international support for India's independence. Figures like Dadabhai Naoroji, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Jawaharlal Nehru effectively used English to articulate their vision of a free India, both in India and on global platforms.
