UNIT IX: LITERARY THEORY POST WORLD WAR II (SHORT NOTES) HPSC | | | UNIT IX: LITERARY THEORY POST WORLD WAR II 1. MARXISM Marxism as a literary theory originates from the political and economic theories of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, particularly from their critique of capitalism. In the literary domain, Marxist criticism analyzes texts through the lens of class struggle, economic power structures, and ideological control. It views literature not merely as art but as a product of material conditions and a reflection of the historical and economic context in which it is produced. Marxist critics believe that literature both shapes and is shaped by social forces, particularly the conflicts between the ruling class (bourgeoisie) and the working class (proletariat) . A fundamental concept in Marxist literary theory is ideology, which refers to the dominant ideas and beliefs that uphold the interests of the ruling class. These ideologies are often subtly embedded in literature, presenting the social order as natural or inevitable. Marxist critics work to expose these hidden ideologies and to reveal how literature can either reinforce or resist social oppression. For example, a novel that glorifies individual success without critiquing the socio-economic system may be seen as supporting capitalist ideology. Marxist literary analysis also examines the role of class consciousness and alienation. Characters are often interpreted according to their social class, and their interactions may be analyzed in terms of class conflict. A Marxist reading may explore how literature represents the working class, either as victims, rebels, or as romanticized figures. It also pays attention to how labor, commodification, and exploitation are depicted. For instance, Charles Dickens'novels often reveal the harsh realities of industrial capitalism, while also sometimes reinforcing middle-class moral values. A significant shift in Marxist literary theory came with the development of Western Marxism and thinkers like Antonio Gramsci, who introduced the concept of cultural hegemony—the idea that the ruling class maintains power through cultural institutions, including literature. Later critics like Louis Althusser emphasized the role of Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) in sustaining ideology. Terry Eagleton, a major Marxist literary critic, argued that literature is not autonomous but a form of cultural production that must be understood in historical materialist terms. In conclusion, Marxist literary criticism offers a powerful framework for understanding how literature engages with the structures of power and economy. It interrogates texts to uncover the socio-economic forces at play and seeks to challenge the status quo by promoting class awareness and social change. By highlighting the material and ideological conditions of literary production, Marxism remains a vital tool for analyzing the intersection of literature, history, and politics. 2. POSTSTRUCTURALISM AND DECONSTRUCTION Poststructuralism emerged in the 1960s and 1970s as a reaction against Structuralism, especially its assumptions of fixed meanings, binary oppositions, and stable structures in language and culture. While structuralism emphasized order and coherence in language, poststructuralism highlights instability, multiplicity, and contradiction. It argues that meaning is not inherent or fixed ina text but is fluid, contingent, and shaped by context, culture, and the reader. Key thinkers in poststructuralism include Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, and Julia Kristeva. At the core of poststructuralism is the belief that language is inherently unstable. According to Derrida, words gain meaning not through direct reference to things but through their differences from other words—a concept derived from Saussure’s theory of signs. This idea challenges the belief in absolute truth or singular interpretations. Since language is our

FAQs

How does Marxist literary theory analyze literature?

It reads texts through class struggle, economic power structures, and ideological control. It treats literature as tied to material conditions and the historical context of production.

What is ideology in Marxist criticism?

Ideology refers to dominant ideas and beliefs that support the ruling class. Marxist critics expose hidden ideologies in literature and show whether works reinforce or resist social oppression.

What is deconstruction, and what role does différance play?

Deconstruction unpacks internal contradictions in a text rather than simply destroying meaning. différance explains how meaning is produced through differences and is always deferred, never fully present.
