It is characterized by a break from traditional forms and a departure from established norms in literature, art, music, and culture. Modernist writers and artists sought to capture the rapidly changing world, the impact of industrialization, urbanization, and the aftermath of World War I. This movement was marked by a sense of disillusionment, experimentation, and a focus on individual consciousness. **Literary Background:** Modernism was influenced by several factors, including: ** 1. Industrialization:** - The Industrial Revolution, which began in the late 18th century and continued into the 19th century, transformed society. It marked the shift from agrarian and rural life to industrial and urban living. - The rapid mechanization of industries, the growth of factories, and the expansion of railways and transportation networks changed people's lifestyles and work patterns. - In literature, industrialization led to a focus on themes related to urban life, class struggle, and the impact of technology on society. Writers began to explore the alienating effects of the modern industrial world on individuals. **2. Urbanization:** - As industrialization progressed, there was a significant migration of people from rural areas to urban centers in search of employment and abetter life. - Cities grew rapidly, leading to overcrowding, pollution, and social stratification. This urban environment provided fertile ground for new experiences and perspectives. - Modernist literature often depicted the challenges and complexities of urban life, highlighting the disorientation and disconnection experienced by individuals in these bustling, impersonal settings. **3. Scientific Advances:** - The late 19th and early 20th centuries witnessed groundbreaking scientific discoveries and theories. For example, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution challenged traditional religious beliefs about the origin of life. - Sigmund Freud's work in psychology introduced the concept of the unconscious mind, leading to an exploration of human psychology in literature. - Advances in physics, such as Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, challenged established notions of space and time. -These scientific developments influenced modernist writers, who began to explore the complexities of the human mind and the relativity of reality. Stream-of-consciousness narrative techniques and psychological introspection became prominent in their works. **4. World Wars:** - World War I ( 1914-1918) and World War II ( 1939-1945) were two devastating conflicts that had a profound impact on society and culture. -World War I, in particular, shattered the optimism and confidence of the pre-war era. The unprecedented scale of death and destruction led to a sense of disillusionment. - Modernist liter
