UNIT 3 AREA OF STUDY 1 - Microeconomics: The Market System, Resource Allocation and Government Intervention

Sep 20, 2026

Unit 3 Area of Study 1 introduces microeconomics through the market system, focusing on how markets operate to allocate scarce resources. It examines relative scarcity, choice, opportunity cost, and the efficiency concepts that connect to the production possibility frontier. The sequence covers demand and supply, market equilibrium, market structures, price elasticity, and how non-price factors shift outcomes. It also analyses market failure and evaluates government intervention, including cases where intervention unintentionally reduces efficiency.

This is true in both poor and rich countries. • In economically poor countries, improvement may come from access to more food, to vaccinations against preventable diseases like malaria, to clean drinking water and basic education, and to dwellings that protect them from the elements. • In economically rich countries, however, people often expect much more. Not only will most of their basic wants be met, but many also expect to have access to a range of other, largely non-essential consumer goods and services—wants like touch-screen phones and Bluetooth headphones, the latest music, a tropical holiday among whispering palm trees and warm sapphire waters, body makeovers, an extensive wardrobe with something fashionable for every occasion, and the newest appliances for their massive, energy-devouring designer homes. Added to this good material life, people in high income countries also expect non-material things like living in freedom with justice, far away from the ravages of war and violence, in a pristinely-clean environment, with job satisfaction, a lot of leisure time and personal happiness all round! FIGURE 1.1 Expectations of living standards and wellbeing can be extremely different between economically poor and rich countries. Without natural resources including land, labour resources and capital resources or equipment such as crop harvesters, it is not possible to produce food or other good

FAQs

What is the learning focus of Unit 3 Area of Study 1 in microeconomics?

The unit focuses on analysing how markets operate to allocate resources and on evaluating the role of markets and government intervention in achieving efficient outcomes.

How do relative scarcity and opportunity cost relate to resource allocation?

Relative scarcity drives the need for choice. Opportunity cost explains the value of the next best alternative, supporting analysis of efficiency in how resources are allocated.

What determines market equilibrium and how do non-price factors matter?

Equilibrium price and quantity traded are determined by supply and demand. Changes in non-price demand and supply factors shift the curves and therefore affect equilibrium and resource allocation.

How do market failures lead to government intervention, and when can intervention reduce efficiency?

The unit reviews types of market failure and how government intervention can address them. It also examines situations where government intervention unintentionally decreases efficiency.
