Tube substitution is one of the only feasible methods to repair or restore originaltube equipment, but it should not be performed haphazardly. This handbook, itemizing allknown vacuum tubes that have been or are still being manufactured, along with their replacements, willmake tube substitution not only possible, butrelatively straigh+-forward and efficient. This guide is divided into three parts: Section 1:Vacuum Tube Substitution, listing all knownvacuum tubes (excluding picture tubes)in numeric-alphabeticorder,with reference to appropriate substitutions and diagramsdetailing base pin arrangement. Section 2:Picture Tube Substitution, listing all known picturetubes in numeric-alphabetic order, with reference to appropriatesubstitutions and diagrams detailing base pin arrangement. Section 3:Base Diagrams, illustrating nearly 900 pinarrangements which detail each ofthe tubes listedin thehandbook. # Vacuum TubeSubstitutes This section lists,in numeric-alphabetic order, all known receiving tubes. To use thislisting, look in the first column for the tube typeyou want to replace, then finda suitablesubstitute in the third column. The substitutes are only those tubes which have similaror improved characteristics and can be inserted directly into the socket. No rewiringormechanical changes are needed, although the associated servicecontrols may haveto be readjusted. The symbols which may follow a substitute, refer to specialcharacteristics of the tube and are shown in the key below. When no substitutesare shown, none are recommended. The second column contains the basingcode. To use this number, turn to Section 3 to reference your tube substitution selectionagainst the

FAQs

What is the purpose of Tube Substitution Handbook?

It provides a detailed, organized reference of known vacuum tubes and picture tubes along with suitable replacements and base pin diagrams to make tube substitution efficient and reliable.

How should a technician use the vacuum tube substitution lists?

Locate the tube type to be replaced in the first column, then select an appropriate substitute from the third column. Use the basing code to consult Section 3 diagrams for pin connections.

Are all substitutes safe for every circuit?

No. The handbook warns that substitutions must match characteristics such as heater-to-cathode potential and notes special symbols for specific requirements. It also mentions radiation-related constraints, recommending later-produced tubes when possible.
