This Peace is a political polemic by Nobel laureate Thomas Mann, written in response to the 1938 Munich Agreement. Mann utilizes his profound skill as a pamphleteer to critique the diplomatic settlement, arguing that the peace treaty was fundamentally detrimental to the future of democratic nations. The text provides a biting, vitriolic, and controlled examination of European politics on the eve of World War II, serving as a significant companion piece to his earlier work, The Coming Victory of Democracy. This edition further incorporates a compelling address delivered by Mann in New York on November 9, 1938, underscoring his urgent call to action for the preservation of democratic values against rising authoritarianism. As a historical document, it captures the intense intellectual climate of the era and the warnings of one of the 20th century's most esteemed men of letters regarding the fragility of peace in the face of unchecked aggression.
