They Called Us Enemy - Memories of Japanese American Internment

Sep 29, 2026

This graphic memoir provides a poignant, historical account of the Japanese American internment during World War II, as experienced by the author and his family. The narrative explores the themes of systemic injustice, the loss of civil liberties, and the confusion faced by children trapped behind barbed-wire fences. Through a combination of intimate family recollections and historical context, the work depicts the forced relocation to internment camps, the psychological toll of being viewed as an enemy within one's own country, and the struggle to maintain hope and humanity under restrictive conditions. By documenting these personal memories, the author highlights the emotional weight of childhood innocence abruptly confronted by political prejudice and state-sanctioned incarceration, serving as a powerful reflection on civil rights, racial discrimination, and the lasting impact of historical trauma on immigrant identity and familial resilience in the United States.
