Weather and climate are introduced as the foundations shaping everyday life across the world, influencing clothing, food, shelter, and even appearance. The text explains how the atmosphere enables life by shielding from the Sun and providing breathable air, and describes how sunlight distribution, Earth’s rotation, land-water differences, and seasonal motion drive winds and changing weather. It also covers key processes such as evaporation and condensation that sustain rain.

Crops grow better in some climates than in others. In placeswith little plant life man's food is very limited. The Bushmen of theKalahari desert in southern Africa exist by hunting wild animalsand digging up roots.Eskimos live mainly on food from the sea, including fish, seals, and walruses. Man's shelter takes many forms:igloos built of snow, houseson stilts in areas where heavy rains produce frequent floods,thick-walled houses to keep out the heat, houses with pointedroofs for the rain to run off or with flat roofs for sleeping on inthe cool night air,and tents that can be packed up and carriedfrom place to place. Climate affects not onlywhat people wear but evenhow they look.Eskimoswho live in the Arcticregions of Alaska wear fur-trimmed parkas of thickmaterial to keep out thecold. The Eskimos'short, broad bodies retain heatmore easily than the bodiesof people who are tall andthin. # The Earth and Its Weather Life as we know it is possible because our Earth has anenvelope of air around it,hundreds of miles thick, which we callthe atmosphere. The atmosphere protects us from the Sun andprovides the air we breathe. The effects of the Sun,the atmos-phere,the rotation of the Earth and its motion around the Sun,and the composition of the Earth's surface combine to give usour climates, with the varying seasons and,in many places,day-to-day changes in weather. To appreciate the importance of the atmosphere, consider theMoon, which has no atmosphere.Temperatures in the daytimeare so

FAQs

How does climate influence daily life according to the text?

It affects what people wear, what they eat, and the type of houses they live in, depending on sunshine, rainfall, cold seasons, winds, and related conditions.

Why is the atmosphere essential for life on Earth?

It protects life by shielding from the Sun’s rays and providing the air people breathe, while also acting as a blanket at night by holding heat in.

What drives wind patterns and day-to-day weather changes?

Unequal heating of Earth’s surface creates air movements, Earth’s rotation deflects winds, land and water heat differently creating pressure differences, and wandering air masses carry rain as they interact and change temperature.
