A gothic-tinged coming-of-age novel opens on Charlotte, a fifteen-year-old who clings to comforting memories even as an oppressive grief has taken residence in her home. In a Berkeley Square house where music has stopped and letters remain unanswered, Charlotte finds solace in imagined versions of her mother. The prologue introduces a world of family secrets, forbidden books, and romantic tension, as courtship stories and passionate literary tastes surface against a suffocating silence.

It was a deceiver, creeping into unguarded moments to whisper lies about hope. When she curled into the old window seat, breathing in the ghost of rosewater that still clung to its worn velvet, she could almost hear familiar footsteps echoing down the corridor. Almost see her mother stepping through the doorway with a wide smile, ready to dismiss the servants and transform their Berkeley Square home into a world where books harbored secrets no ballroom would ever dare speak. But those delusions of hope dissolved as quickly as they came, replaced by the suffocating weight that had settled over their house five years ago—a heaviness that seemed to seep from the walls themselves. It lived in the crystal vases that had remained empty, no one else caring to fill them with the garden roses her mother had favored. In the pianoforte that gathered dust, its keys untouched since the household had learned to live without music. In the old, unanswered correspondence that still sat on the library desk, yellowed with age but somehow too precious to discard. Today, Charlotte didn’t want to be reminded of reality just yet. She wanted to cling to that fragile dream, to pretend her mother might appear at any moment with arms full of books and that familiar mischievous gleam in her expression. She pressed her forehead against the cool window glass, watching the world below slowly stir to life. Then she closed her eyes and surrendered to memory’s gentle pull. “Which shall it be today, my darling?” her mother asked, settling into their favorite window seat. Sunlight streamed through the leaded glass, catching the pearls at her mother ’s throat and making them glow like captured starlight. At fifteen, Charlotte considered herself nearly grown, but she still couldn’t resist curling up beside her mother as she had since childhood. “Perhaps the new Wordsworth?” Charlotte suggested, though she already knew what was coming. Every third Sunday, her mother ’s eyes would sparkle, and some forbidden volume would emerge from the folds of her skirts. “Actually,” her mother ’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, “I have something far more interesting.” She produced a slim volume bound in dark blue leather.“Lord Byron’s latest. Your father thinks it’s quite improper for young ladies, which is precisely why we must read it.” From his desk by the fire, her father cleared his throat without looking up from his ledgers. “I can hear you corrupting our daughter, Elizabeth.”“Nonsense, Harold.” Charlotte’s mother waved her hand dismissively and smiled that particular smile that always made her father soften.“I’m educating her about life, love, and passion. There’s quite a difference.”“A dangerous difference, according to society.” But he was

What role do books and literature play in the story’s early scene?

Her mother introduces forbidden volumes—such as Lord Byron—framing reading as education about life, love, and passion. The father’s sense of propriety contrasts with the mother’s conspiratorial excitement.
