In a video statement, the Reform UK leader claimed to be the victim of a media stitch-up and insisted he’d “done nothing wrong” in accepting gifts from wealthy backers. All the main parties dismissed his resignation as a desperate stunt and said they would boycott the by-election. Farage’s announcement followed the revelation that he had accepted various undeclared benefits in kind from his long-time aide George Cottrell, aka “Posh George”, a convicted fraudster. These included the provision of private security and social-media staff, and the use of a five-storey house near Buckingham Palace. Farage said that he hadn’t needed to register those benefits because they’d pre-dated his decision to run for Parliament, and that he was entitled to stay occasionally in the house of a friend. The Lib Dems referred the Cottrell revelations to Parliament’s standards watchdog, which is already looking into Farage’s failure to disclose a £5m gift from the cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, received shortly before he was elected as an MP in 2024. What the editorials said “Farage is no stranger to political risks,” said The Daily Telegraph. Over his career, he has resigned as leader of his various parties four times, only to come back stronger. This latest gamble, though, may bea miscalculation. Farage appears to be trying to pre-empt the verdict of Parliament’s standards watchdog, said The Guardian, by suggesting that the only legitimate arbiter of his conduct should be the voters in Clacton. But it’s not up to voters to decide whether parliamentary rules have been broken. Farage is following the Trump playbook, said The Independent: when in trouble,“deflect, divert, distract and cry foul”. While some of his complaints about, say, press intrusion on his family may be valid, his statement didn’t explain why he believes he was justified in not disclosing his gifts. The rules state clearly that any donations made to someone in the year before they become an MP, that could “reasonably be thought by others”to be related to “political activities”, must be declared. Farage seems to think he should be immune from “legitimate media scrutiny”, said The Times. Quizzed about his £5m gift, he snapped that it was “not the public’s business”. He’s quite wrong about that. People have every right to know about Farage’s sketchy aide and his £4m property portfolio. What happened America turns 250 People across the US marked the 250th anniversary of American independence last Saturday, though extreme weather disrupted some events. Donald Trump’s speech, at the National Mall in Washington, was delayed by two hours owing to storm warnings. He had promised a “really long speech”, but having finally taken to the stage at 11.15pm, his address – partly on political themes – lasted 40 minutes. America, he told a scattered crowd, is “doing better now” than ever, before a fireworks display he heralded as the largest “in history”. With 850,000 pyrotechnic devices, it lit up the city for 40 minutes. Temperatures of 40°C forced the cancellation of a major parade in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
