Governor slams district attorney, Cornell police on their handling of rape allegation Hochul also appoints N.Y.’s top prosecutor to lead a reopened inquiry BY AMY B WANG AND JOANNA SLATER New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) on Friday sharply criticized a county district attorney’s o􀀜ce and Cornell University police for allegedly failing to protect a former student who said in 2024 that she was drugged and gangraped at a fraternity house in Ithaca. Hochul also called on state legislators to tighten a law that limits the ability to prosecute asexual assault case if the victim voluntarily became intoxicated.“This young woman had already endured something that is utterly unspeakable. And then, at every turn, she was failed by people and institutions with an obligation to protect her,” Hochul said at a news conference alongside New York Attorney General Letitia James (D). Hochul on Thursday appointed James as special prosecutor to lead a reopened criminal investigation after saying she had lost faith in Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten’s ability to fairly oversee the case. Van Houten said that he supports James’s appointment and that his o􀀜ce will cooperate fully with her. “I trust that she will examine the facts and apply the law,” Van Houten said Friday in a statement. “It has become clear that we were not provided the full picture by the University. G-7 to open its oil reserves in bid to reduce fuel prices | 100 MILLION BARRELS OVER FOUR MONTHS | | | --- | --- | | Move follows Trump’s threat to ban diesel exports | | | BY EVAN HALPER, RILEY BEGGIN AND ELLEN FRANCIS
The world’s wealthiest countries announced Friday that they would release 100 million barrels of diesel, gasoline and crude oil from their emergency reserves over the next four months, inan e􀀝ort to ease crushing prices around the world.
The move by the Group of 7 nations followed Trump administration threats that the United States would ban exports of its diesel fuel. Such a ban threatened to create chaos in global markets and send costs surging further, especially in Europe, where motorists and businesses are already struggling with expensive fuel.
Europe faced the choice of dipping into its reserves or dealing with the fallout of a U.S. export ban. | As part of Friday’s agreement, the diesel that will flow into the market will come from European stocks. The deal involves a“front-loaded substantial diesel release within the first 20 days.”That could ease prices some.
Diesel and oil futures dipped on news of the announcement. But it was not immediately clear how much relief drivers would see.
About 28 million barrels of diesel are consumed around the world every day. The addition of a few dozen million barrels of the fuel over four months creates only a measured increase in the global supply.
“This is a short-term bandage for a wound that is still wide open,” said Brett Erickson, a risk advisory consultant who closely monitors oil and gas markets.
