Oct 13, 2026

A fifteenth-century chapter from the HISTORY OF KINGSWINFORD presents the figure of John Bredhill, a parson, and documents his formal complaint to church authority. The text recounts an alleged unlawful entry into his parsonage at Kingswinford during Whitsontide, including the breaking of coffers and removal of both books and household goods, along with profit losses to the church. A note discusses a doubtful word (“Phic/Physic”), and the chapter includes an illustrations section describing relevant historical manuscripts and permission credits.

FAQs

What incident does John Bredhill describe in his complaint?

He alleges that, on Whitsontide, specific men unlawfully entered his parsonage at Kingswinford, broke coffers, and took away books and goods while putting his servants out of their place.

What kinds of items does the complaint list as stolen?

It lists glosed theological and scholarly books, household goods such as beddings and tapestry, money amounts and silver items, and various equipment and provisions tied to the church.

How does the note in the text affect the reading of the complaint?

It highlights a doubtful contraction, reading “Phic” as “Physic,” and notes John’s word may instead be “Phie,” making the intended meaning difficult to decide.
