The document explains India’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), launched in April 2015, and its strategy for building self-reliance in high-performance computing. It describes governance by DST and MeitY, implementation through C-DAC and IISc, and a phased Build approach for indigenous supercomputing infrastructure. It outlines current mission status, evolution of the PARAM series, and planned scale-up to dozens of supercomputers with capacity targets, plus impacts on research, national development, and UN SDGs.

drug discovery and identify areas at risk of river flooding. Its applications extend acrossclimate science, space research, healthcare and engineering, helping scientists tacklecomplex challenges and develop new technologies. Supercomputers are powerful computing systems designed to cary out complexcalculations at exceptional speeds. They use large numbers of processors workingtogether to perform many calculations at the same time. This allows researchers toanalyse vast amounts of data and run detailed simulations-computer models used tostudy how real-world systems behave. These capabilities make supercomputersessential tools for advanced scientific research and projects of national importance. India's growing use of digita technologies is increasing the demand for computingpower.Fields such as artificial intelligence, weather forecasting and space researchrequire powerful computing systems. To meet this need, the Government is expandingaccess to supercomputers across research institutions. This effort also strengthensIndia's ability to develop its own computing technologies, supporting the vision ofAatmanirbhar Bharat. # The Strategy Behind National Supercomputing Mission India launched the National Supercomputing Mission(NSM)n April 2015 tostrengthen the country's computing capabilities. The Mission was launched with anoutlay of Rs.4,500 crore. It is jointly steered by the Department of Science andTechnology(DST)and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology(MeitY) The Mission aims to build self-reliance in supercomputing and strengthen India's high-performance computing capabilities. It promotes the use of supercomputing for research, development and problem-solving across scientific and technologicadomains. It also supports he development of solutions for societalapplications. The Mission seeks to establish a globally competitivesupercomputing ecosystem in India. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing(C-DAC),Pune,and the Indian Institute of Science(IISc),Bengaluru, implement he Mission.NSM follows a 'Buildapproach'consisting of three concurrent phases to createindigenous supercomputing infrastructure: assembly, manufacturing, and design and manufacturing support. This approach combines the expansion of computing infrastructure with the development ofindigenous capabilities. A supercomputer's power is measured in FLOPS (Floating Point OperationsPer Second). This tells us how many calculations it can perform in one second. One teraFLOPS(TF)means one tillion calculations per second, while onepetaFLOPS(PF)means one quadrilion calculations per second. In June 2026,the world's fastest Supercomputer achieved 2198.4 petaFLOPS inthe high performance benchmark. ## Current Status of the Mission Under NSM,India has established an ecosystem focused on achieving self-reliancein supercomputng. It covers supercomputer d

FAQs

When was India’s National Supercomputing Mission launched and what is its main goal?

NSM was launched in April 2015. The mission aims to build self-reliance in supercomputing and strengthen India’s high-performance computing capabilities for research and problem-solving.

How is the NSM implemented and what approach does it follow?

The Mission is implemented by C-DAC (Pune) and IISc (Bengaluru). It follows a 'Build' approach with three concurrent phases: assembly, manufacturing, and design and manufacturing support.

What progress has been reported in the PARAM series and NSM deployment capacity?

The document traces the PARAM series from PARAM 8000 to newer systems like PARAM Yuva. It also states that by September 2026, India had deployed 40 supercomputers with a combined capacity of 68 PF, including systems above 1 PF.
