Chapter One: The Sea Refuses Its Due

The storm had erased the horizon.

Rain came sideways across Shipbreaker Bay, needling through Lucerys’s gloves and running cold beneath the collar of his riding coat. Far below, the sea rose in long black ridges, every crest torn white by the wind. Above him, Arrax beat at the gale with a ragged, frightened rhythm.

Lucerys could not see Dragonstone. He could not see Storm’s End. At times he could barely see the dragon beneath him.

“Left!” he shouted.

The word vanished into the storm.

Arrax lurched. His wet wings struck empty air, found it again, then faltered. Lucerys’s injured hand slipped on the harness. He clenched his fingers until the leather bit into his palm.

Behind them came a sound too deep to be thunder.

Vhagar.

Her shadow passed through the rain, immense enough to swallow the world. One yellow eye appeared above the cloud of spray and darkness, then disappeared behind another curtain of water. Arrax shrieked and twisted. His terror travelled through the saddle and into Lucerys’s bones.

Lucerys looked over his shoulder.

Aemond was a dark figure above Vhagar’s neck, one arm raised to shield his face from the rain. His hair streamed behind him. The sapphire set into his empty eye socket caught a thin, cold flash of lightning.

Lucerys did not hear the first command. He only saw Aemond’s arm move.

Vhagar opened her jaws.

Fire glowed between her teeth.

“Arrax!”

His dragon answered with terror, not obedience. Arrax folded one wing and dropped. Vhagar’s fire passed over them, a sheet of orange swallowed almost at once by the rain. Heat struck Lucerys between the shoulders. Arrax screamed and rolled.

For one breath they fell together through the storm.

Then Vhagar came down.

Aemond saw the smaller dragon tumbling beneath her, no longer master of his own flight. The distance between pursuit and killing disappeared.

“Hold!”

His voice could not carry through the wind, but Vhagar heard him.

Or she heard something.

The old dragon checked her descent with a violent beat of her wings. Air buckled around her. Lucerys’s harness jerked forward. Arrax spun beneath him, one wing beating crookedly, his tail lashing at the rain.

Vhagar’s talons swept past.

They did not close around Arrax’s body. One caught the harness instead.

Leather snapped.

The force tore Lucerys sideways. His shoulder struck the saddle horn. Pain flashed white behind his eyes. Arrax’s cry broke into a wet, choking sound as the harness ripped free.

Aemond hauled at the reins.

“Stop! Vhagar, stop!”

The great dragon’s momentum carried her onward. One talon clipped Arrax’s wing. Bone cracked beneath the roar of the wind. The young dragon dropped, no longer flying, only falling with pieces of tack streaming behind him.

Lucerys fell with him.

For a moment he was not a prince, nor an heir, nor the son of the woman who claimed the Iron Throne. He was only weight in the air, torn from a broken saddle.

Rain slapped his face. The sea moved beneath him, black and restless. Fragments of Arrax’s harness spun end over end. Far below, something red flashed through the water. Fire, perhaps. Blood.

Then the sea took him.

The impact struck harder than stone.

His ribs gave beneath it. His left shoulder wrenched out and back with a sickening grind. Water forced itself into his nose and mouth. He sank through green-black darkness, his coat dragging at his arms and legs.

Somewhere above, something enormous roared.

Lucerys tried to swim.

His right hand moved. His legs kicked once. His left arm hung uselessly beside him.

The sea closed over his head.

He opened his eyes. Pale shapes drifted downward through the dim water: splintered wood, torn leather, the pale underside of Arrax’s wing. The dragon’s body sank into the darkness below.

Lucerys reached for him.

His fingers closed on nothing.

Cold entered him slowly, then all at once. His chest convulsed. He swallowed seawater. The darkness narrowed to a single point of light, bright as a star.

He thought of Jace.

He thought of his mother’s hands, warm against his cheeks when he was small.

He thought, absurdly, of the message he had failed to deliver.

Then thought itself stopped.

A net struck his back.

The blow dragged him sideways. Rope tightened around his coat and caught beneath his good arm. Above him, a blurred shape moved against the dim surface.

A man dove after him.

The fisherman’s boots kicked hard as he seized the net and pulled. Another figure leaned over the side of the boat, hauling the rope hand over hand.

“Something’s caught!”

“Then cut it loose!”

“It’s a man!”

“Gods preserve us. Pull!”

Lucerys broke the surface beneath the boat’s lee side. Hands caught his coat, his hair, the belt at his waist. He heard curses and the slap of waves against the planks. A knife flashed. The net parted.

They dragged him over the gunwale and dropped him onto the wet boards.

The deck rolled beneath him. Someone turned him onto his side. Water poured from his mouth. He coughed once, twice, then vomited seawater across the planks.

“Easy,” said a woman near his head. “Easy, boy.”

He tried to answer. His throat produced only a torn rasp.

The fisherman who had gone into the sea knelt beside him, dripping and pale. He looked no older than thirty. Rainwater filled his beard, and a scar ran from his ear to his jaw.

“Is he breathing?” the other man asked.

“Not well enough.”

“He’ll slow us.”

“He’s alive.”

The woman struck Lucerys between the shoulders. Pain flared through his ribs. He made a broken sound.

“Alive enough,” she said.

The boat swung sharply. The mast groaned. Their sail, patched in three different colours, cracked like a whip. One of the seams opened.

“Reef it!” shouted the scarred fisherman.

The woman scrambled toward the mast. The second man seized the line. Rain blurred the deck and the sea alike. The torn sail bellied, collapsed, then filled again, dragging the little vessel toward the rocks.

Lucerys lay where they had thrown him, unable to rise. Every breath scraped through his chest. His shoulder throbbed as though someone had packed it with burning iron. He tried to remember where he was.

Storm’s End.

The bay.

Aemond.

Vhagar.

Arrax.

The names slipped apart before he could hold them.

The scarred fisherman crouched beside him and searched his clothes. No sword. The prince’s dagger had gone with the saddle. His boots were too fine, though one had split open at the ankle. Beneath his soaked coat, wool riding clothes clung to his body, dark with seawater and blood.

“Not a fisherman,” the man muttered.

“Could be a squire,” said the woman, still fighting with the sail.

“No squire wears silk beneath his leathers.”

“Then he can pay us when he wakes.”

The third man, old and bent from years at sea, peered into the sky.

“Did you see what fell?”

“Dragon,” said the scarred fisherman.

“Two dragons.”

The old man crossed himself in the fashion of the Seven. His fingers trembled as he did it. “Then we should not have him.”

The woman returned, dragging the wet line through her hands. “We have him now.”

A roar rolled across the bay.

All four fishermen froze.

Vhagar circled high above the storm, a mountain with wings. Arrax was nowhere to be seen. Lightning opened the sky around the old dragon, showing the ragged outline of her body before darkness swallowed it again.

The scarred fisherman looked down at Lucerys.

“Can that be yours?”

Lucerys’s eyelids fluttered. The words reached him from the far end of a tunnel.

No.

He tried to say it.

The woman bent near his face. “What?”

His mouth formed a name, but the storm tore it to pieces.

“Arrax?”

She glanced at the others.

The old man spat over the side. “Not ours.”

“None of this is ours,” said the scarred fisherman. “Turn south.”

“We cannot make the inlet in this wind.”

“Then we make the inlet badly.”

The boat pitched. Lucerys rolled against a coil of rope. Pain drove him fully awake for an instant. He reached for the nearest thing and caught the scarred man’s wrist.

The fisherman stared down at him.

Lucerys forced air into his lungs.

“Dragonstone.”

The word came out thin as a child’s whisper.

The fisherman’s face changed. Recognition did not come. Suspicion did.

“What did he say?”

“Nothing useful,” the woman answered.

Lucerys’s grip loosened. His head struck the deck.

The sea rose around them.

On the far side of the bay, Aemond guided Vhagar upward through the rain.

He could not see Arrax.

He could not see Lucerys.

Vhagar fought the reins and turned her massive head toward the water. Her throat rumbled with the unfinished force of her fury. Aemond hauled back until the leather cut into his gloves.

“Enough.”

The dragon’s eye rolled toward him.

He had commanded her to stop. She had stopped too late.

Below, the sea broke against the cliffs. White water filled the narrow coves and vanished beneath the storm. Aemond searched for a body, a wing, a flash of red scales. He found only black water and wreckage.

A strip of leather spun past Vhagar’s left wing.

He saw the mark burned into it: a small three-headed dragon worked in silver thread.

Lucerys’s harness.

Aemond reached for it, but the wind carried it away.

Vhagar screamed.

The sound passed through his ribs. Aemond closed his fist around the reins.

He had wanted the boy frightened. He had wanted Lucerys to feel the terror of being hunted. For one suspended moment, he had wanted him to understand what it meant to stand beneath the shadow of a stronger creature.

He had not wanted this.

That changed nothing.

Aemond looked once more toward the sea.

“Find him,” he said.

Vhagar gave no answer.

He turned her toward King’s Landing.

The fishing boat found shelter because the storm drove it there.

The inlet was little more than a cut between black rocks. The boat struck the shore hard enough to throw the old man against the mast. The scarred fisherman jumped into waist-deep water and dragged the bow toward a narrow strip of shingle. The woman and the other man lifted Lucerys between them.

His boots dragged over the stones. His head lolled against the woman’s shoulder.

“He’s burning,” she said.

“Cold does that,” replied the scarred fisherman.

“He’s bleeding.”

“Everyone is bleeding.”

They carried him into a ruined net shed above the beach. Half the roof had collapsed, but the remaining beams kept off the worst of the rain. The old man built a fire from dry kindling stored inside a sealed jar. The woman stripped away Lucerys’s coat and cut through the shirt beneath it.

His shoulder had swollen and was already darkening. Bruises spread along his ribs in the shape of the harness and saddle. A cut crossed his brow. His lips had turned blue.

The woman pressed two fingers beneath his nose.

“Still with us?”

Lucerys opened his eyes.

There was no storm in them now. Only confusion.

“Where?”

“On land,” she said.

“Arrax.”

“Your dragon?”

He tried to sit. His body refused. The scarred fisherman put a hand against his chest.

“Do not move.”

“Arrax,” Lucerys whispered again.

No one answered.

The woman laid a folded blanket over him. “What is your name?”

He looked at her, but the question seemed to strike somewhere beyond pain. His mouth moved.

“Luke.”

The name came easily. It was what his brothers called him when no one else could hear.

“Luke what?”

His eyes closed.

The scarred fisherman searched him again. At the inside of Lucerys’s left glove, stitched beneath the cuff, he found a ring tied to a narrow cord. The gold looked plain at first, but a dark green stone sat in its setting. A silver seahorse had been worked across its face.

He held it toward the fire.

The woman went still.

“That is not a squire’s ring.”

“No,” he said.

Outside, something moved along the shore.

They heard boots grinding over wet stones, followed by the low murmur of men.

The old man snuffed the fire with his boot.

The woman pulled the blanket higher over Lucerys’s face. The scarred fisherman closed his hand around the ring.

Through a gap in the broken wall, three figures appeared on the beach. Their cloaks were black with rain, and each carried a hooked pole for turning wreckage. One held a lantern. Another pointed toward the inlet.

“Search the cove,” called the man with the lantern. “The dragon fell somewhere along this stretch.”

“Looking for the boy or the beast?”

“Both. The prince’s body is worth more than the dragon’s.”

The fisherman’s fingers tightened around the signet.

Inside the shed, Lucerys stirred. His breath caught. The woman pressed a hand over his mouth, not harshly, but firmly enough to hold the sound inside him.

The men came closer.

The scarred fisherman moved to the doorway and lifted a broken oar as if it were a spear. The woman crouched behind a stack of nets. The old man stood beside the cold hearth, his face empty and stubborn.

Lantern light shone through the rain.

“Boat’s here,” one of the searchers said.

“Anyone aboard?”

“Fishermen.”

“Ask them.”

The scarred man looked down at the gold ring in his palm. The seahorse caught the last grey light.

He slipped it beneath his belt.

Then he stepped into the rain.

Aemond reached King’s Landing after dark.

Vhagar landed in the yard with enough force to shake water from the battlements. Dragonkeepers ran toward her, shouting warnings to one another. Aemond dismounted before they could reach him.

His boots struck the stones. His left shoulder ached from the reins. Rain ran down his face and into the collar of his coat. He did not remove the glove from his right hand.

A servant waited beneath the covered walk.

“The Hand requires you.”

“Where is the king?”

“In council.”

“Then the Hand can wait.”

The servant swallowed. “He said it concerned the prince.”

FAQs

What is the main plot of The Sea Refuses Its Due: A House of the Dragon Fanfiction?

The story explores an alternate narrative where Prince Lucerys Velaryon survives the clash over Shipbreaker Bay after Prince Aemond orders Vhagar to stop. Pulled from the sea by local fishermen, Lucerys conceals his identity while the Black and Green factions clash over conflicting reports, ultimately driving both sides to face the truth and negotiate a fragile peace corridor.

What is the core theme and central metaphor of this story?

The narrative centers on the human cost of political war and the burden of truth. The sea's refusal to swallow Lucerys symbolizes how living witnesses disrupt the rigid, sanitized narratives crafted by political factions, replacing revenge with complex moral accountability.

Which main characters are featured in The Sea Refuses Its Due: A House of the Dragon Fanfiction?

The core cast includes Prince Lucerys Velaryon, Prince Aemond Targaryen, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, Otto Hightower, and Lord Corlys Velaryon, alongside coastal commoners who shelter the wounded prince.

How does this fanfiction connect to and diverge from the original House of the Dragon canon?

While grounded in the canonical atmosphere, political tension, and characters of House of the Dragon, the fanfiction diverges immediately after the confrontation at Shipbreaker Bay. Rather than Lucerys dying, his survival becomes a pivotal catalyst that alters the outbreak of total war into a tense, negotiated truce.
