His Teaching…………14 The Sayings…………… …24 # Introduction uddhism is considered to be one of the mostimportant world faiths and it certainly has itsinfluence on the spiritual life of the planet.Itis estimated that half the countries of the world havebeen directly infuenced by Buddhist thinking.Howmany practising Buddhists actually exist on the faceof the globe is hard to estimate, but what is evident isthat the power of Buddhism to capture the imaginationof the human mind is as strong today as it was whenthe Buddha gave his doctrine of "The Middle Way'to a gathering of five men who had been his originalfollowers in the Deer Park in Saranath in about 450 BC. This was a teaching that he himself thought long andhard about before delivering because he thought it sosubtle and demanding that few would be able to follow, and yet, here in a time in which materialism is said togovern our thinking, the power of this man's spiritual realization still has a profound influence, and a growingone, particularly as far as the West is concerned.Thissays a lot about what this one man discovered in deepmeditation. It also says a lot about us as human beings. Are his words of such forceful influence because theyspeak directly to something which all of us hold withinus and in our more penetrating moments dimly realize? His name was Siddhartha Gautama. He was born in487 BC inLumbini,a state that spanned the border of modern-day Nepal andNorthern India. He was born into the Kshatriya, the warrior caste, part of a ruling family. His father was determined to provide for his
