The text argues that the Year Four Learning Matrix (MPT4) must be handled carefully, because diagnostic assessment only has educational value if meaningful action follows diagnosis. It compares international practice and stresses that the key issue is how results are interpreted and whether systems can respond with targeted, skill-specific interventions. It warns against turning MPT4 into a high-stakes exam through parental pressure, school ranking, and tuition marketing, emphasizing clear communication and classroom support.

Officially, MPT4 i􀂩 not a replacement for UPSR. It has been frajned as a diagnostic assessment to identify pupils' · strengths and weaknesses early so that teachers can plan interventions in Years Five and Six. That intention is educationally sound. Internationally, assessing pupils during the primary years is not unusual although systems differ in purpose and design. .England has a Year 4 multiplication check to assess pupils' recall of times tables. Scotland administers national standardised assessments in stages, including Primary 4, and presents them as providing diagnostic information for teachers. Australia conducts its National Assessment ProgrammeLiteracy and Numeracy (Naplan) in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and assessment-for-learning tools are used · in Singapore to diagnose learning gaps and provide teachers with feedback for instruction. These examples show that the issue is not whether children should ever be assessed. The real issue is what the assessment is used for, how the results are interpreted and whether the system has the capacity to respond. This is where MPT4 must be handled with care. A diagnostic assessment is meaningful only i.;f something educationally useful'happens after the diagnosis. If MPT4 merely produces marks, reports, files, comparisons, parental anxiety ·and a new ■■II t market for tuition packages, then it will fail its purpose. A qiagnostic test should not stop at asking, ''What score did the pupil get?" Instead, it must ask: What exactly has the pupil not mastered, what support is needed, who will provide it and how will progress be monitored? IfMPT4 leads to broqd remedial programmes without clear prioritisation, it may compress the curriculum rather than strength en learning. . Intervention must be targeted, not symbolic. Pupils who struggle with inferential reading do not .ne􀂪d the same support as those who la􀂫k vocabulary. ·Pupils who have. difficulty with fractions do not need the same intervention as those who struggle with word problems. If MPT4 results are reported only as overall scores, teachers will not receive enough information to act meaningfully. What they need are skill-specific diagnostic information, practical guidance, time and professional support. There is also the danger of washback: assessments do not . merely measure learning; they also shape teaching, learning and · behaviour. Even if MPT4 is designed as .a low-stakes diagnostic tool, society can turn it into a high-stakes one. FAQs

Why does the text say MPT4 must be handled with care?

Because a diagnostic assessment is meaningful only if something educationally useful happens after diagnosis; otherwise it becomes just another test producing reports and marks.

What does the text recommend teachers do with MPT4 results?

Use skill-specific diagnostic information to guide time, practical support, and classroom interventions, rather than relying on overall scores that are too limited to act effectively.

How can society turn MPT4 into a high-stakes assessment?

By treating it as a make-or-break examination, comparing results quietly, and marketing tuition packages for MPT4 preparation, which recreates exam pressures even without the same official name.

What communication and boundaries does the text call for?

Schools should clearly explain what kind of report parents will receive, how it should be interpreted, and what it must not be used for, while setting boundaries like no ranking, no public comparison, and no reputational competition.
