The Proud White Circus Horse - A Story by Reiner Zimnik

Sep 29, 2026

The Proud White Circus Horse is a poignant and beautifully illustrated narrative by Reiner Zimnik. It tells the tale of a slender and exceptionally vain white circus horse that, believing itself to be superior to its life in 'The Gay Round of Pleasure' circus, abandons its home and its devoted clown caregiver. As the horse ventures into the world, it quickly discovers that vanity and physical grace are not enough for survival. Exploited by a bandit rather than valued by honest people, the horse faces the harsh realities of hunger and loneliness. Ultimately, this story serves as a profound meditation on humility, gratitude, and the discovery of one's true place in the world. Zimnik’s expressive, minimalist drawings function as an essential component of the storytelling, deepening the emotional resonance of the horse's journey from pride to wisdom. This classic fable captures the timeless tension between the desire for greatness and the importance of belonging.
