I would like to thank the Saratoga Experiential NaturalScientific Research Institute(SENSRI)for generously provid-ing the financial support that made this book possible.I wouldalso like to thank Christian Sweningsen for his enthusiastic helpwith the illustrations and in clarifying important points per-taining to physics that are addressed in the selected lectures. # Preface When Stephen Edelglass died in November of 2000,shortlybefore his sixty-fifth birthday,he had lived a rich and fulfillinglife. He himself, however, would probably have been the firstto say that he had taken only a few small steps toward his goalof developing a physics rooted in human experience. But as wenow look back on his life and work,we can say that those steps, though perhaps small, were momentous. For they set out boldlyand enthusiastically in a new direction that leads toward a deeperexperience and understanding of the physical world. Moreover, they pointed out the way to others. This book is dedicated tothose who, like Stephen, wish to explore this path.
