A BERMON BY REV.ROBERT PATTERSON,D.D., PASTOR OFTHE FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH,SAN FRANCISco, Sunday Morning,May 9th,1875. "And He took bread and gave thanks and brake it,and gave unto them,8aying,This is my body which is given for you;this do in remembrance ofme."—Luke xxii,19. “This do in remembrance of me.”How sublimely simplethese words of institution. What a condescension in all God'sapproaches to mankind. The high and lofty One,that inhabitetheternity, takes a handful of dust and moulds it to the form of ahuman body, and then breathes his own breath into that clay.He comes down from heaven to visit His children on earth, andsits beside Abraham at his tent door, and eats his bread as thoughhe were a brother and friend.Coming down in mighty powerto deliver his oppressed Israel, the Angel of the Lord, evenwhen appearing in a flame of fire, selects a bramble-bush for Histabernacle;and when long afterward, the Word was made fleshand dwelt among us,while the angels of heaven were singinghis doxologies,a stable was his birth-place,and a manger hiscradle, because there was no room for him in the inn. No doubt our Lord could,if he would, have surrounded thissolemn sacrament of his holy religion with all the dignity ofinstitution in the courts of the temple, with an offering upon thebrazen altar, with a connection with that mysterious Holy ofHolies into which the high priest entered once every year, sprinkling atoning blood. And there are those to-day who thinkthat our Lord made a mistake in failing to surround t
