A historical essay tracing the emergence of alchemical practice, beginning with classical Greek ideas on metals and change and arguing that practical technicians likely prepared “white” and “yellow” metals before systematic theorizing. It explains the Egyptian context through Zosimus’ account, priestly gold-working centered at Memphis, and temple furnace traditions. It further discusses related techniques such as gold plating, gilding with leaf, mercury-based processes, coloring with varnishes and corrosives, and alleged methods to alter gold’s value or weight. Papyrus evidence from Leyden and Stockholm supports the narrative.

FAQs

Why does the essay argue that Greeks did not practice chemistry or alchemy despite having theoretical ideas?

It notes that classical Greek ideas existed, but there is “no reason to suppose that they practiced either chemistry or alchemy.” The author suggests practical success in transmutation likely preceded deeper pursuit of the art.

What role does Egypt, especially Memphis and the god Ptah, play in the origin story?

The essay states that ancient Egypt treated winning and working gold as a priestly craft centered on Ptah at Memphis. It describes Ptah as “master of gold smelters and goldsmiths,” and links alchemical-like furnace knowledge to temple context.

What evidence is cited from papyri to support early attempts to make precious metals?

It explains that numerous papyri were unearthed in Roman Egypt and that two papyri, called those of Leyden and Stockholm, are “extremely interesting” sources, though the authors are unknown. References are provided to scholarly editions and translations.
