The Problem OfJunk E-mail
America Online(AOL)last week unveiled
PreferredMail,a new tool that blocks receipts of e-mail
from a regularly updated list of notoriousjunk e-mailers.
"Junk e-mail is the number one complaint from our
members,"says AOLCEO Steve Case."We have a strict
policy against AOL members sending unsolicited mass
mailings and we want to give them the tools to protect
themselves from junk mail sent from outside AOL."By
using keyword:PreferredMail, members can view a list
of sites and choose to receive mail from those sites. In the
past,AOL had blocked all junk e-mail to all AOL
accounts from a limited number of sites that had been the
subject of vast numbers of member complaints. Those
blocks have been lifted now that the PreferredMail
safeguard is in place."PreferredMail is a great solution
to the problem of junk e-mail because it gives members
a choice,"Case says.“AOL is not making a decision for
its members, the power is in their hands."AOL also
introduced a way for members to opt out of receiving
AOL's own marketing“pop-ups,”which offer special
products, often at reduced prices, tomembersas they sign
on to the service. | | --- | EDP Weekly The Nation's Leading Weekly Computer News Summary—Now In Its 37th YearVol.37 No.42October 28,1996Page 1 Online Transaction Security Issues OvershadowedBy Concerns About Waylaid Information NewVersionOffersBetter NetworkingPerformance,Reliability For Mac/Mac OS-Compatible Systems Apple Computer Inc.,has released AppleOpenTransport 1.1.1,anenhancedversionof the Cupertino,Calif.,company'sstandards-basednetworkingand com-munications system for Macintosh and Mac OS-com-patible computers.
