And two, a great deal of splashing was coming from somewhere off to her left. Shaking all over, Autumn closed her eyes and tried to evaluate. Quickly. The last thing she remembered, she was in Moonwell Manor. She was there with with Rasmus. She was there with Rasmus de Wilde, the boy who appeared in her life all those weeks ago. The boy she had followed through the Mossy Wood and into an enchanted hideout—after he magically warned her away from confronting the man who turned out to be her birth father, Felix Moonwell. The boy who had led her to the truth. The truth of the infection, of her magic, of her village . . . of her past. Only hours ago—or was it minutes?—he had dragged her from her sleep and whisked her away. She had been so overjoyed to see him out of his addled, infected delirium that she hadn’t asked any questions. She had simply gone along with it, climbing onto the flying broomstick and into the dark sky— Until he landed the broomstick in front of the manor in the dead of night.
