Course material explains why coordinated architectural and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) design is essential for urban indoor comfort, productivity, environmental control, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It introduces “active” MEP services and outlines a 10-chapter structure covering HVAC, air distribution, fire-fighting, fire alarm, vertical transportation, plumbing, electrical, and specialties including communications/security, plus MEP interface with other disciplines. Chapter 1 focuses on building classification, efficiency ratios, geometric factors, and climate-based orientation strategies to reduce energy use and improve performance.

[info@cedengineering.ca](info@cedengineering.ca) | The MEP Design of Building Services – M06-034 THE MEP DESIGN OF BUILDING SERVICES Overview People in urban settings spend between 80 and 90% of their time in indoor spaces both during work and during leisure time. It is therefore important that the Architect and the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) engineers work in unison to ensure the quality environment. A good design can result in: • Healthy and comfortable living • Better environmental control • Operational efficiency • Lower greenhouse gas emissions • Increased productivity Remember MEP services are one area that makes the difference between comfortable and complaining occupants. In this course, we will focus on “active” MEP services. The course comprises of 10 Chapters: CHAPTER – 1 : KNOW YOUR BUILDING CHAPTER – 2: HVAC SYSTEMS CHAPTER – 3: AIR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM CHAPTER – 4: FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS CHAPTER – 5: FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS CHAPTER – 6: VERTICAL TRANSPORATION CHAPTER – 7: PLUMBING SYSTEMS CHAPTER – 8: ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS CHAPTER – 9: SPECIALTIES / COMMUNICATIONS + SECURITY CHAPTER – 10: MEP INTERFACE AND RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES i The MEP Design of Building Services – M06-034 CHAPTER-1 KNOW YOUR BUILDING CLASSIFICATION OF BUILDINGS Buildings may be classified as low-rise, high-rise, and a number of other categories. • Low-rise building is: − less than seven (7) stories or 75 ft. from street level. Most model codes adopt this classification which was originally based on the capacity of the firefighting truck ladders to reach the building heights effectively. − reached by conventional fire-truck ladders • High-rise building: buildings from 7 to 29 stories • Super high-rise building: 30 to 50 stories • Skyscraper: 51 stories upward BUILDING EFFICIENCY FACTORS Factors used to evaluate the effectiveness of the building design: • Net-to-gross ratio (NGR) • Floor-efficiency ratio (FER) Net-to-Gross Ratio (NGR) NGR = 100 x NFA/GFA Where • NFA= net floor area, (ft2) • GFA=gross floor area (ft2) NFA is the usable floor area that can be used by the occupants, excluding the area taken by stairs, circulation space, elevators, lobbies, structural columns, MEP equipment and shafts. GFA includes the entire constructed floor area. Floor-Efficiency Ratio (FER) FER is used for office buildings to calculate the rentable space on typical rental floors. FER = 100 x (NRA/GFA) Where, • NRA = net rentable area (ft2) • GFA = Gross floor area (ft2) Normally, an FER of 85% is considered an excellent design. 1 The MEP Design of Building Services – M06-034 GEOMETRIC FACTORS Factors used to evaluate economics and energy-effectiveness relative to building geometry and form: • VSR = volume-to-surface ratio • APR = area-to-perimeter ratio Volume-to-Surface Ratio VSR = V / S Where, • V = volume of building (ft3) • S = total exterior surface of building (ft2) The volume to surface area ratio of a building is an important factor in determining heat loss and gain. The greater the VSR ratio, the lower will be the heat gain/loss through it. A cost effective energy efficient building will therefore MINIMIZE exterior surfaces (walls and roof) and MAXIMIZE interior volume (floor area x height) . Area-to-Perimeter Ratio (APR) APR is the typical floor area divided by the perimeter length of the floor (most upper floors are substantially the same) . APR = A/P Where, • A = typical or representative floor area of building (ft2) • P = linear dimension of perimeter of a typical or representative floor (ft.) The surface area of the building is a function of the perimeter (aspect ratio) and the building height. The geometric shap

FAQs

Why is MEP coordination with architects important in building design?

Because people spend most of their time in indoor spaces, unified architectural and MEP work helps ensure a quality environment. The material links good MEP design to health and comfort, better environmental control, operational efficiency, reduced emissions, and increased productivity.

What are net-to-gross ratio (NGR) and floor-efficiency ratio (FER)?

NGR is calculated as 100 x NFA/GFA, where NFA excludes areas taken by circulation, stairs, elevators, lobbies, structural columns, MEP equipment, and shafts, while GFA includes the entire constructed floor area. FER is 100 x (NRA/GFA) and is used for office buildings to estimate rentable space, with 85% presented as an excellent design benchmark.

How do geometric factors like VSR and APR relate to energy performance?

The material states that a higher volume-to-surface ratio (VSR = V/S) reduces heat gain/loss because it implies less exterior surface area. It also defines area-to-perimeter ratio (APR = A/P) and explains that surface area depends on perimeter/aspect ratio and building height, with aspect ratio 1:1 minimizing perimeter and surface area.
