In Tibet,every city,town,village,and even every home has itsown temple,which provides a focus for the social and spirituallife of the Tibetan community.Tibet once had over 6000temples.Every important historical event,often linked to areligious revolution,left behind a great temple as an historicalmark.Famous temples were concentrated in Tibet,but manywere also located in the surrounding regions:Gansu,Qinghai,Sichuan,and Yongnan Provinces.Farther off,many famoustemples were located in Inner Mongolia,Beijing,and Chengde. The wide distribution of Tibetan temples throughout China wasthe result of historical and political factors.During the YanDynasty (1271-1368 AD).the emperors,who were descendentsof Genghis Khan of Mongolia,adopted Tibetan Buddhism asthe national religion of China.During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD),to keep peaceful relations with,and to control Tibetand Mongolia,the emperors encouraged the building of Tibetantemples in these two regions.During the Qing Dynasty(1644-1911 AD).Tibetan Buddhism again became the nationalreligion,imperial Tibetan Buddhist temples were built inBeijing and Chengde (northeast of Beijing)(Figurel).
