I recall with a sense of joy the happy golden ex-periences in the Class Fellowship of my own MethodistChurch.I listened eagerly to the ripe and happytestimonies of the brethren, and in this school of prayercame the oft-repeated request:Lord, teach us topray.'This is the basis of our meditation on THELORD's PRAYER. The secret of prayer came to me in a forceful waywhile undergoing an operation. The healing power ofprayer dismissed all sense of fear and anxiety, andprayer enabled me to repose my trust in God theUnfailing Helper. While engaged as Chaplain to theCentral Middlesex Hospital I was deeply impressed bythe value of prayer, especially when I observed howmen and women of Christian belief seemed to be filledwith a quiet peace, and faced the operating theatrewith fortitude and courage. They believed in prayerand there came a healing balm. During the London blitz, when we were deprived ofrest, prayer brought a sense of relief as,in the air-raidshelters,we held communion with our Risen Lord.In the crises of life, when we are faced with the realitiesof war, prayer has given us new strength for ourexactingduties, and in our hearts a feeling of warm thanksgivingto God has been evoked. 6 On the eve of the battle of Trafalgar,Lord Nelsonprayed:'May the great God,whom I worship, grantto my country and for the benefit of Europe in general,a great and glorious victory.'There are prayersforged in the fires of war which express the deepyearning of the human heart. At a critical timeduring the war,His Majesty the King made a solemncall to prayer and dedication:'That we may beworthily matched with this new summons of "Destiny!" At this moment when we are striving to weave apattern of peace we may sing: There's a hush of expectation, and a quiet in the air;And the breath of God is moving in the fervent breath of prayer.
