The livelycareer of a school librarian One of the liveliest and most stimulating jobs in the worldis that of the school librarian. One newcomer says:"Nowthat I find myself a school librarian, the feeling I have athearing these words is entirely different from any feelingI might have had about the work before. It is one com-pounded of excitement, enthusiasm, wonderment and ex-haustion.The exhilaration is accompanied,on my part atleast,by the sense that even giving all one has of one'sresources is not enough.” # Why should this be true? The youngsters, first of all!The education of youth isa vital process, and the school librarian is an importantmember of the educational team. His job is a complex one. With teachers he builds a library collection that supports and supplements everysubject taught in the school. He works with elementary, junior,or senior high school pupils,or with all three, tomeet their needs for information and to stimulate theirreading interests and development.Working always withother faculty members,he selects and organizes the books, films, magazines, recordings, and other materials thatmake up the library. He plans and carries out a programof instruction in the use of the library so that studentscan carry on independent study and research. He man-ages the library's budget, publicizes and promotes its serv-ices,and often trains and supervises a corps of studentassistants. He works closely with public and other librar-ians in the community as they too help to meet the needsof students and teachers. Another reason for the particularimportance and stimulation of theschool librarian's job is the com-bined effect of today's expanded en-rollments,the advancement of know-ledge itself, with an increase in whatis to be learned, and the increaseddemands being made on the library by changing methods of instruction.Much greater empha-sis is placed today on each student's use of library ma-terials,even in the elementary school. The school libraryis the instruction resource center of the school. It includesnot only books, magazines, and pamphlets, but often films, slides, pictures, maps, recordings, and other newer mediaincluding programs for self-instruction. Since very often there is only one librarian in a school,he does all kinds of library work:evaluation, selection andordering of materials, organization of the collection,cir-culation of materials, assisting with reference questions, instruction in the use of the library, advising and guid-ing individual readers in the choice of materials. He sup-plies materials in all the subjects, and for all grade andreading levels included in the school. In more and more school systems, however, such workas ordering and cataloging library materials is being cen-tralized.Thus the librarian in the individual school isfreed from this part of the work, while specialized posi-tions are created for those who like best this part of thelibrarian's job.As libraries grow, many schools are add-ing specialists in audio-visual materials and in subjectareas to their library staffs. Many school libraries haveclerical assistants so that the librarian's time is not con-sumed by routines. # Wha are the satisfactions? ■ You are a member of a proud profession, welcomed by teachersas a colleague, respected by students for your specialized know-ledge and help for them, greeted with warmth by communityleaders who are aware of the need for more school librarians like you.Yet all of this means little when comparedwith the feeling of accomplishment when a childcomes in after class, eyes bright with the suC-cess of his report. Whether in secondary or elementaryschools, the librarian is at the verycenter of the learning process.Read- ing ability and skill in listening and viewing are important to success in school and in laterlife, and whether working with the superior or slowerstudent, the librarian can challenge him with the oppor-tunity to develop his reading interests and skills.
