The Lice is a significant poetry collection by the renowned American poet W.S. Merwin, originally published in 1967. This work is celebrated for its profound philosophical inquiry, sparse and haunting imagery, and its engagement with themes of loss, human perception, and the natural world. Drawing inspiration from Heraclitus, the collection serves as a pivotal point in Merwin's career, marking a transition toward a more minimalist and surrealist aesthetic. It includes various poems previously featured in prominent journals like The New Yorker and The Nation, reflecting a mid-century literary voice grappling with existential questions and the complexity of truth. The collection stands as a testament to Merwin's mastery of language and his unique ability to evoke the surreal landscapes of the human condition and the enduring mysteries of existence.
