The Impact of the CLT Approach in Developing English Language Skills among Saudi EFL Students: Students' Perceptions

This study investigates Saudi EFL students’ perceptions of the Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach and its influence on enhancing the four primary English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 30 purposefully selected participants from Taif University, drawn from various educational backgrounds and geographic locations, including both urban and rural areas. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify significant patterns within the collected data. Results indicate that CLT notably improved students' overall engagement and fluency, particularly in listening and speaking abilities. However, the study also identified several obstacles, including inadequate teacher training, disparities in resources between urban and rural educational settings, and the presence of linguistic anxiety among students. Students pursuing STEM fields exhibited a greater inclination towards accepting CLT, possibly due to their prior exposure to interactive learning methodologies, while students from rural areas encountered greater challenges in adapting to the student-centered nature of CLT. To effectively mitigate these identified challenges, the research emphasizes the critical need for extensive teacher training initiatives, coupled with curriculum modifications that integrate digital learning tools, and the implementation of targeted strategies aimed at reducing students' linguistic anxiety. Further research is recommended to explore the sustained impact of CLT implementation over longer periods and to assess the potential benefits of blended learning models within Saudi EFL contexts.
