The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a complete English-language dystopian novel, presented here as a 292-page PDF book with page numbers. Set in a near-future America transformed by environmental disasters, declining birthrates, and political upheaval, the story imagines the rise of the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian state that uses religious doctrine to justify the systematic control of women.
Offred, whose assigned name identifies her as the property of a Commander, is one of the few fertile women forced into reproductive servitude. Separated from her husband and daughter during the regime’s takeover, she lives under strict surveillance in the household of Commander Fred Waterford and his wife, Serena Joy. Her daily existence follows elaborate rituals designed to regulate her body, movements, and relationships. Yet memories of her former life preserve a sense of identity that Gilead cannot entirely erase.
The novel explores Offred’s complicated relationships with the Commander, Serena Joy, and Nick, while her friendship with the rebellious Moira offers a glimpse of resistance. Through flashbacks to her mother, her friend Luke, and the gradual loss of ordinary freedoms, the narrative reveals how political power transforms intimate life. Public executions, the threat of the Colonies, forbidden reading, and the rigid hierarchy of Wives, Marthas, and Handmaids expose the violence beneath Gilead’s claims of moral order.
First published in 1985, Atwood’s landmark work combines political satire, psychological suspense, and feminist speculation. Its fragmented first-person narration makes memory, uncertainty, and storytelling central to Offred’s struggle. Shortlisted for the 1986 Booker Prize, the novel continues to provoke debate about reproductive rights, authoritarianism, religious extremism, and the vulnerability of civil liberties.

About the Book

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She has only one function: to breed. If she deviates, she will, like dissenters, be hanged at the wall or sent out to die slowly of radiation sickness. But even a repressive state cannot obliterate desire – neither Offred’s nor that ofthe two men on which her future hangs.
