FAQs

Who were the Hellenes, and how did early Greek populations spread?

The document describes Hellenes as Indo-European nomads, including Dorian, Aeolian, and Ionian tribes. It traces migrations from Black Sea and Danube regions and notes later control of Greece and parts of Asia Minor and the Aegean islands.

What characterizes the Age of Homer in the material?

The Age of Homer is dated from about 1000 B.C.E. to about 750 B.C.E., and is described as Greece’s “Dark Ages,” when little information is known. It highlights Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey and mentions Troy’s discovery by Heinrich Schliemann.

How did geography influence development and trade in Greece?

Mountains hindered communication and unification, contributing to independent city-states. Seas and seaports encouraged trade, while poor farmland limited crops and forced people to trade, making Greece leading traders in the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean.
