Throughout history, there have been times in great conflict, fear, and anxiety where man has used his ingenuity and courageto stave off the threat of annihilation by a determined enemy. One need not look far to find examples of this in the dark daysof World War II.For aperiod of four long, hard, years the BritishRoyal Navy, the RAF,and the best and brightest of England'sintelligence and scientific community pooled their resources inone effort and one effort only:Sink the Tirpitz, the largest, mostheavily armed warship in Hitler's navy. The monumental taskwould not be easy however.Aircraft, midget submarines, human torpedoes, commando teams, and massive armorpiercing bombs were all expended on Tirpitz in an effort todestroy her. Some of these missions met with success, whileothers failed costing large numbers of men their lives or theirfreedom.Nevertheless,if Britain or her ally the Soviet Unionwere to stay in the war,the Royal Navy would have to crush theKriegsmarine, and that meant sending what Winston Churchillcalled"The Beast"to the bottom at all costs. This is the true storyon how it was done. r.
