In order to progress,to advance,to improve,there must exist interest,courage and perse-verance.There should be an interest in doing,in thinking,in advancing ideas,in convincingothers.The pioneers of progress should pos-sess courage to state convictions,to aim forestablished goals or ideals despite rebuffs anddiscouragement;courage to withstand rebuttals,to advance ideas in a positive way and to facedisagreements.To maintain interest and cour-age,perseverance is necessary;perseverance tostrive for the alterations and revisions visualizedas improvements;perseverance to stand firmon convictions,to believe in the purpose ofwhat is being done or attempted There have been no"overnight"changes innursing methods,technics,ideas,practices,butrather there has been a gradual developmentover a period of years.Nurses will readily agreethat progress in nursing has been a processthat has evolved by stages and degrees.A long-standing interest in professional ideals has beenshown by members of the nursing profession.As this interest continues and is supplementedby courage and perseverance,progress in nurs-ing is inevitable. The past 50 years have been witness to mem-orable milestones in nursing.Active membersof today's nursing profession can assist indetermining the number of milestones in thenext 50 years.A means by which every Michi-gan nurse can participate in the progress ofnursing lies in the immediate future:the MSNAconvention in Detroit,Nov.1-4.During thesefour days,nurses will pool interests and willrenew their incentive to maintain courage andperseverance in professional activities.Haveyou made plans
