This randomized controlled experimental study examined how music affects nursing students’ peripheral intravenous catheter placement skills, anxiety levels, self-confidence perceptions, and selected vital signs. Sixty nursing students were enrolled at a state university; the intervention group (n=30) listened to music during skill training, while the control group (n=30) received standard training. Results showed no significant between-group difference in PIVC placement ability. Music listening decreased anxiety scores and respiratory rate while increasing self-confidence and systolic-diastolic blood pressure.

Students in the intervention group (n = 30) listened to music during the skill training. Students in the control group (n = 30) received standard skill training. Results: There was no significant difference between groups in terms of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) placement ability. It was observed that the anxiety score of the group that listened to music decreased, self-confidence score increased, respiratory rate decreased, and blood pressure increased. Conclusion: It was found that music listened to students practicing PIVC placement had no effect on skill acquisition, decreased anxiety, increased selfconfidence, decreased respiratory rate, and increased systolic-diastolic blood pressure. No: NCT05867277) Keywords: Anxiety, intravenous catheter, music, nursing students Introduction Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) insertion is the most commonly performed procedure by healthcare professionals in healthcare institutions.1 A PIVC catheter is a short, flexible tube inserted into a peripheral vein to administer fluid, medication, or blood. Although this procedure is frequently used, it causes many complications in patients. For the safe administration of PIVC, it is essential that nurses possess the necessary knowledge and skills.2 Skill training in nursing education first begins in professional skills laboratories. Professional skills laboratories have the effect of improving psychomotor skills through repetitive practice and reducing students’ excitement of the first experience.3 During laboratory training, students have the opportunity to develop their skills on models to prepare for clinical practice.4Teaching PIVC placement is one of the most challenging skills both in laboratory settings and during clinical internships.1 The PIVC placement procedure causes stress and anxiety in students due to the multitude of application steps, difficulties in transferring theory to practice, fear of failure, and the traumatic effect it creates on the patient.5,6 One of the most important problems caused by anxiety is learning difficulties.
