The Dystopian Impulse in Modern Literature - Fiction as Social Criticism

Sep 20, 2026

The Dystopian Impulse in Modern Literature examines dystopian fiction as a vehicle for social critique, tracing how utopian dreams and their technological or ideological promises can turn into systems of control. The introduction frames Orlando, Florida’s Disneyworld as a dual emblem of fantasy and machinery, linking utopian escapism with a darker, surveillance-like order. The book then develops a historical and analytical account through major authors and contemporary postmodern perspectives, connecting literature and dystopia.
