# THE DONKEYKOF NAZARETHby Arndiey Tanant 2 I am Benjamin the donkey. My home is in Nazareth.☆a village in Galilee.and my master is a carpenter calledJoseph. My story is about Joseph, his wife and the Child Jesus. One winter.the Roman Emperor wanted to make alist of all his people.Joseph and Mary had to go/toBethlehem,the City of David.because Joseph came☆from the family of David. It was a long journey to Bethlehem from the hills ofGalilee, and I was glad to carry the kind and gentleMary.Joseph walked beside us with a strong stick.女When we reached Bethlehem,it was late at night andvery dark.Every street seemed to be full of people. When we came to the inn.thatwas full too.and the innkeepersaid he had no room for us.Wewere all very tired.and I knewJoseph was worrying aboutMary.who sat so quietly andpatiently on my back. 3 ☆ ☆ ☆4 The innkeeper felt very sorry for us.He saidthe only place he could find us shelter for thenight would be in the stable.Thankfully.wefollowed him into the dimly-lit stable.whichwas warm and dry.and smelt of fresh hay. My master piled up the hay to make a bedfor Mary, then.lifting her from my back.laid her down to sleep. He led me to a stallwith the oxen.took off my saddle and fed me.Although it had been so noisy when we camethrough the streets.it was very still and quietin the stable.I soon fell asleep. I woke up suddenly and listened.I hadheard the first faint cries of a new bornbaby. The stable seemed full of light and Icould see Mary with her Baby.Jesus.in herarms. There was no cradle for Him.soMary wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a bedof hay in the manger. 5 ☆ ☆ 江 Joseph and Mary.the oxen and I,gazed at the Baby withwonder. This was no ordinary baby.this was the Christ Child. All was very still.Even the little mouse.which had beenrustling under the hay in the corner of the stable.was quiet. Then in the stillness.I heard the sound of voices and hurrying footsteps.and through the doorway came shepherds.one only a young boy.Silent and still.they stood for a moment 奴 blinking in the bright light.Then.when they saw theChild in the manger.they knelt down and worshippedHim.An old shepherd had carried in a new born ☆ lamb.and laid it down beside him.Slowly thelamb staggered to its feet and peered overthe edge of the manger. It bleated softly as it saw the tiny Baby peacefullyasleep on the hay. The shepherd boy turned to Mary and said. "How I wish I had a present to give to the Christ Child, but I havenothing. We were in the fields.taking care of our sheep.when suddenlythere was an angel before us.We were all very frightened.but theangel said we had nothing to fear.for he had wonderful news for us.He told us to leave our sheep and come to Bethlehem, where we wouldfind the Christ here in the stable. We came as quickly as we could.so wehave no money, and I had nothing to give Him." With a smile.Mary said. "The Child does not want presents from you.all He wants is yourlove." At last the shepherds rose to their feet. They went slowly out of thestable.back to their flock in the hills.
