A club luncheon program featuring addresses by Catholic and diplomatic figures introduces themes of government, morality, and international peace in the context of apartheid. Archbishop John R. Quinn describes leadership succession and the appointment of Soviet and other officials, while commentary and speeches by Anglican Bishop C. Edward Crowther argue that apartheid, established in 1948, sustains oppression through laws that protect a small white minority. The text details social and economic consequences, including malnutrition and denied basic rights for most South Africans.

What is afoot in South Africa?Whydoes the very mention of the Republic ofSouth Africa excite such emotional re-sponses?Why do thousands of peoplemarch in Washington,San Francisco,LosAngeles,Chicago,London, and through-out the world, when prominent citizens ofthe Republic of South Africa are known tobe guests or to be speaking to some soci-ety? I want to establish one credential withyou. My interest is not merely academic.Iam not an easy-chair critic of South Af-rica.I spent almost three years livingunder the regime of apartheid. I lived within the shadow of the DeBeers Diamond Corp.in Kimberly,a sub-sidiary of the Anglo-American Gold Cor-poration.The vast majority of my peopleworked for De Beers, and I know some-thing about the price of diamonds.I knowthat one out of every six of the children born to the black members of my diocesedied of malnutrition before the age of five. This is a fact of life in the richest countryon the face of the earth, whose earth yieldsgold, uranium and diamonds. The cost ofthe miningin terms of human life is inde-scribable. ## “Apart Hate” I want to establish the credibility of onewho has worked several years with thevictims the system called apartheid.Youcan remember how to pronounce apart-heid if you remember what it basicallymeans,"apart hate."Apartheid was estab-lished in 1948 with the election of theNationalist Party of the South Africa, inorder to preserve white Christian civiliza-tion in Africa.A highly oppressive systemof government.apartheid is ruthlessly en-forced by many laws. Apartheid is one of the most thoroughlyerected structures in the whole world,de-signed to protect the rights of a very smallminority,at the expense of the overwhelm-ing majority of the non-white people ofSouth Africa.Only 19 percent of SouthAfrica's 20.5 million people, happen to bewhite;68 percent of the people are Bantuor people of pure African ancestry;10 per-cent a
