A pain started in her upper thigh and, every time she moved, raced all the way down her freshly shaved leg and up to the tip of her toes. Her toenails were painted coral, an ironic choice she hadn’t been able to resist when she saw it in the shop. When she’d shown the colour to her sister, Coral, the reaction had been muted and disappointing. Some people had no sense of humour, Sandy had thought to herself. She couldn’t see their colour now, though. And she was grateful for that. If she couldn’t see as far away as her own toes, clearly nobody would be able to see her. “And relax.” The instructor said, finally. Sandy collapsed onto the mat, feeling the lycra shorts stick to her sweaty thighs and her sweaty thighs stick to each other. “We’ll take a moment for water and then we’ll have a few minutes of relaxation to end. You’ve all done so well.” The instructor ’s voice continued. Her breathing was under control. Her voice didn’t sound at pain. Her name was Felicia Dove and if Sandy was ever going to have a girl crush, it would probably be on her. She demonstrated the most complex version of every yoga position, then showed how it could be adapted stage by stage, until finally she reached a variation that Sandy could manage. While not terribly unfit, Sandy had been mortified to realise how much flexibility she had lost over the years. Felicia had a wonderful way of seeming pleased with every member of the class as she walked around the darkened inflatable bubble. No matter how easy the variation being practiced, Felicia would appear by Sandy’s side and congratulate her, encourage her to stretch a little further, remind her to focus on her centre. Sandy took a hungry glug of water, knowing not to drink as quick or as desperately as her body wanted to. She’d learnt that lesson in her first class. She swallowed, then took another swig. In the corner of the room, Felicia turned the lights on a dim setting and then stepped between the obstacle course of bodies to return to her own mat at the front of the pod. Hot yoga, it was called on the flyers, and that was definitely an accurate description. Felicia set up a huge inflatable pod in the church recreation room, zipped everyone inside and blasted heaters into the already warm space. Sandy could feel the sweat pool underneath her chest, across her back, and those thighs were well and truly joined together in holy matrimony. “And when you’re ready, lie on your back and close your eyes. I’ll play some relaxation music.” Felicia said. Sandy met her gaze and smiled at her between heavy breaths. Felicia was a fresh burst of energy in Waterfell Tweed, a woman deeply passionate about all manner of human rights who fit more into her days than Sandy could imagine. She was also a big fan of take-out coffee from Sandy’s cafe, in her own reusable travel mug. Sandy glanced across the room and found Cass, already flat out on her mat, her thick dark hair secured in a high ponytail with some kind of clip that made her look like an Arabian princess.
