Our shoes scuffed the sameground trotting to class,queue-ing at the canteen and chasingfootballs across the field—wewere children with big dreams,hearts open to the world and thelimitless possibilities that schooland life would unfold. When we were young,everyclassmate felt like a friend.Theclassroom was a melting pot ofpersonalities:some classmateswere smart,some charming,some noisy,some clever,andsome so quiet that only theteachers glimpsed their gifts. Yet,there was no barrier be-tween us —not of race,not ofclass,not of creed.The smartones were always first in class,bursting with answers and con-fidence,and those who finishedlast still brought laughter,kind-ness and various stories wher-ever they went. Each morning we restarted ourjourney on equal footing,boundby friendship,sharing the snacksour sisters or mothers packedand stories. The report card was importantthen,But it was a momentarymirror:life gave us differentscripts and stages to perform on.While some shone instantlysome shone later,their true tal-ents unfolding as life put them tothe test,proving that success isnot measured by grades but bythe courage to try again. We outgrew the little chairs.not just in height,but also inambition. We discovered a unique worldafter crossing that gate for thelast time—scientists,lawyers,bus drivers.e-hailing driversnurses,doctors,some battlinginvisible storms,some findinggold,some carrying sadness,some radiating joy. A classroom is not just aboutmarks,it is also about the markswe leave on each other. The results in class are re-flected in how we greetstrangers,persevere throughdifficulty,choose to stand forwhat is right.The beauty of val-ues and principles outlastsarithmetic,and respect enduresbeyond geography tests. Today,looking at ourselves,wemarvel at our great past andcherish the memory of ourteachers who saw no colour,noclass,no creed,but worked hardto turn us into good citizens. Behind the scenes,an armymoved quietly—a head-mistress,teachers,the tuckshopaunty who remembered everyname and allergy,the bus driverwho waited through the rain,thedespatch boy sprinting between buildings,the silent office staff,the ever-smiling librarians,theenergetic gardener and the in-dustrious science lab assistant. Our teacher's patience becamea blueprint for dealing with fail-ure.A tuckshop aunty's hug wasthe answer to a lonely day. “Education's purpose is to re-place an empty mind with anopen one,"wrote MalcolmForbes,and in this classroom,openness was more than alesson-it was a way of life. Among us were those whoearned medals for academicsand/or excellence at work,stateand national titles and thosewhose victories were simply sur-viving hardship,persistingthrough loneliness,and learningto forgive. The beauty of our lives wascrafted not in the results of testsand exams,but in the resilience,empathy,patience and hardlessons absorbed between thelines of textbooks,and in thecorridors of hard knocks and thecracks of the schoolyard. Our teachers did not onlyteach,they also believed.In ev- ery child,they saw a story yetunwritten. Years later,gathering at re-unions or scrolling through oldphotos,we marvel not just at ourown journey,but also at the un-der-appreciated architecture ofour early days.
