The Cambridge Handbook of Compliance

Jul 18, 2026

Compliance has become essential across contemporary markets, societies, and governance in both public and private domains. Although substantial empirical and practical expertise exists, there has been no unified understanding of what compliance is and how it shapes different fields and sectors. This handbook bridges disciplinary, regulatory, and legal divides, offering an integrated overview of compliance and its study, while highlighting the core mechanisms that drive compliance behavior and interventions.

Compliance as a Cross-Disciplinary Field

Bridging Disciplinary and Legal Divides

Core Mechanisms Shaping Compliance

Contributors and Academic Scope

the cambridge handbook of compliance Compliance has become key to our contemporary markets, societies, and modes of governance across a variety of public and private domains. While this has stimulated a rich body of empirical and practical expertise on compliance, thus far, there has been no comprehensive understanding of what compliance is or how it influences various fields and sectors. The academic knowledge of compliance has remained siloed along different disciplinary domains, regulatory and legal spheres, and mechanisms and interventions. This handbook bridges these divides to provide the first one-stop overview of what compliance is, how we can best study it, and the core mechanisms that shape it. Written by leading experts, chapters offer perspectives from across law, regulatory studies, management science, criminology, economics, sociology, and psychology. This volume is the definitive and comprehensive account of compliance. Benjamin van Rooij is Professor of Law and Society at the University of Amsterdam, and Global Professor of Law at the University of Cailfornia, Irvine, where he studies compliance and the way law shapes human and organizational conduct. He publishes in leading academic journals as well as in the New York Times, Huffington Post, The Hill, and NPR news radio. D. Daniel Sokol is a professor of law at the University of Florida, an affiliate professor at the University of Florida Warrington College of Business, and the senior advisor to White & Case, LLP.
