Sep 29, 2026

A historically inspired children’s story set in the ancient Indus Valley civilisation, presenting daily life, trade, and agriculture shaped by the annual floods of the Indus and its tributaries. The author’s note explains what archaeologists have discovered about houses, goods, and seals, while also addressing major uncertainties, including people’s appearance, language, religion, leadership, and meaning behind the society. The narrative decisions are acknowledged as imaginative reconstructions awaiting future findings.

Archaeologists know that the Indus Valleypeople lived by trade, exchanging goods they madefor goods they wanted from other places.Theyknow, too, that they used the annual floods of theRiver Indus and its tributaries to help them growenough food for all the people in the cities. The foodwas probably stored in huge granaries to be givenout to the people as they needed it. But no one is quite sure what the Indus Valleypeople looked like, what language they spoke, whatreligion they believed in,or who ruled them andhow. There are lots of different ideas about thesethings. In writing this story,I've had to decide somethings for myself,so I could be quite wrong about them!Perhaps one day the archaeologists will findout all the things we don't yet know. ① 8

FAQs

What does the author’s note say about what archaeologists have found?

It states that Indus Valley cities were built and inhabited around four thousand years ago, and that evidence has been found including houses and items such as pottery, jewellery, toys, cloth, and trading seals.

How did the Indus Valley people grow food according to the note?

The note explains that they used the annual floods of the River Indus and its tributaries to grow enough food for the cities’ populations.

Why does the author mention that some parts of the story may be wrong?

The note says that key details are still uncertain—such as what people looked like, what language they spoke, what religion they believed in, and who ruled them—so the story requires personal decisions and imaginative reconstruction.
