Jul 17, 2026

This document, titled "The Atonement Lamb," explores the theological concept of atonement through the biblical narrative of Jesus Christ as the ultimate sacrifice. It begins by referencing Genesis 3, highlighting how sin separated humanity from a Holy God. The text then details the Old Testament law requiring the sacrifice of a lamb for forgiveness, citing the example of Cain and Abel in Genesis 4 and the Passover lamb in Exodus 12. The document emphasizes that God's true desire is for repentance, love, and obedience, as stated in Isaiah 1:10-20. A pivotal moment is introduced with John the Baptist proclaiming Jesus as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29), fulfilling God's new way through His one and only Son, Jesus (John 3:16). The core message culminates in the understanding that Jesus' death on the cross paid for mankind's sins, referencing 1 Peter 1:19 which describes believers as saved by the precious blood of Christ, the spotless and innocent lamb. The document includes citations from biblical texts such as Genesis, 1 Peter, Hebrews, Exodus, Isaiah, and John. It is illustrated by Richard Gunther and written by Jill Kemp, with a book layout by SIL-PNG Education for Life. The accompanying images depict scenes related to the biblical narrative, including an angelic appearance to shepherds, a burning bush, and a shepherd carrying a lamb, visually reinforcing the themes of divine intervention, sacrifice, and redemption.
